Catch the Shapeshifter is a unique and challenging visual puzzle game that will mesmerize players with unique, 3-D modern art backgrounds and constantly shifting, changing and drifting shapes. The object of the game is to spot the shapes that morph into other shapes and tap them to earn points, but it’s not nearly as easy as it sounds.
50 levels of difficulty
Creative, unique game play
Gorgeous 3-D modern art backgrounds
Hypnotic background music
Challenging visual-perceptual and attention task
Catch the Shapeshifter is a high quality app that will not disappoint. The art and music alone make it hypnotic and relaxing (though I found a few of the 3-D background designs to be downright dizzying!). There is not a clear and obvious tutorial, but I believe developers introduce the game with nonverbal hints (arrows about which shape to tap) to help novice players get the hang of the game play. Some of us are just visually dense, however, and a separate tutorial that explains the objective of the game would be really nice. It took me nearly 30 minutes to figure out what I was trying to do, and a lot longer to do it well enough to pass the first level of the app. I found that aspect to be a bit frustrating.
While I don’t think this app is intended to be specifically “educational,” it has a wealth of skill-building to offer players. The task is to spot the shapes that morph into other shapes. Many of the shapes (colorful, abstract animals) fade in and out of view, and some of them change to completely different shapes when they return to visibility. Tapping those shapes gives points to the player. Tapping the static characters deducts points and can end the round early. There are “boosters” that can help players increase their scores, as well.
The task is actually quite challenging. The 3-D, modern art background is moving, as are the creatures. The creatures spin and move at different speeds. It takes a great deal of concentration and attention, as well as a good visual memory and quick reflexes to find and tap the ones that are changing shapes. This game will certainly give attention, focus, and visual perception a healthy workout.
Catch the Shapeshifter is very entertaining and probably highly-addictive. With fifty levels and a few options for degree of difficulty, players can enjoy it to their hearts’ content for quite some time. The artist who created the backgrounds did an outstanding job of creating and animating a wide array of visions. The background music also is very high quality and enjoyable. Both are in such constant motion that if there is any repetition, it’s next to impossible to notice.
This app is $2.99 on the App Store, and it’s a wonderful value for anyone who enjoys unique puzzles and games. It’s quite challenging, and offers 50 levels at two levels of difficulty, so there’s a ton of play value here.
This app is very child-friendly, but the game is difficult, so young children likely would not be successful. On the other hand, it’s so visually and auditorily hypnotic that they may not care!
Catch the Shapeshifter is a unique and challenging visual perception, attention, and focus puzzle that could quickly become addicting. Spot the Shapeshifter and other creatures that change their shapes as they drift across amazing and fantastic 3-D backdrops.
