Khan Academy Kids is a comprehensive toddler, preschool, and early learning app designed for children ages 2 to 6+. It includes a wealth of age-appropriate activities that will help young children learn about letters, numbers, colors, measurement, science, health, readiness skills, and more.
- Highly interactive
- Adaptive activities
- Easy to play
- Fast-paced activities
- Very engaging
Khan Academy Kids is a great example of a very high quality app for the very young. The app is designed for the youngest players and is very intuitive to use. It works quickly and smoothly, and will adapt and change the content as children demonstrate they have learned core concepts. Parents can set up individualized tracks for multiple children and teachers may even be able to set up for their classrooms (I set up 10 children and it still allowed for more). This app clearly taps into the power of tablets, and exemplifies what apps for young children should look like.
This app is highly educational, but it’s also very engaging. Young children are likely to play again and again. The activities are fast paced, but provide enough repetition to help children master skills. Since it is adaptive, kids won’t be bored by repeating things they’ve already learned, but those that need extra time to learn will have it.
Khan Academy Kids is as comprehensive of an early learning app as I have ever seen. It covers key concepts in academic skills like language development, reading readiness, numbers and early math, and more. It also covers skills and concepts in science, social-emotional learning, fine-motor skills, and executive function (like memory, planning and problem-solving), to name a few. Each activity is carefully designed to be short and sweet, and the app transitions between activities quickly and smoothly.
In addition, there is a vast library of books, specific exercises for the skills covered, coloring pages, art tools, and still more. Parents will be tickled to find books ranging from picture books for young children to early readers for kindergarteners and first graders. There is so much material that it would be difficult for a child to see it all, and developers add more material regularly.
Khan Academy Kids is highly entertaining for the target age group. It is “hosted” by a gang of cuddly creatures who gather in the “Kids Club.” They will welcome your child into the group and share activities. The activities require a variety of responses, and developers have managed to vary them, giving children a chance to engage various types of fine-motor skills, such as tapping and swiping. The included ebooks range from stories about the built-in characters to high quality fiction and nonfiction books designed for young children on highly engaging subject matter.
What’s not to love? This app is completely free to use and has absolutely no outside advertisements. You do not need to subscribe to anything, just sign up one time with your email. There’s even an offline mode for times when you don’t have a ready internet connection.
Khan Academy Kids is as child-friendly as it can be. There are no in-app purchases or outside advertisements. The app keeps track of each child’s progress. A protected parent’s area houses settings and features such as deleting child accounts.

If there is such a thing as a list of perfect apps for young children, this one needs to be on it. It is engaging, comprehensive, and easy to use. Best of all, it is absolutely free!
