Very Veggie is a very high-quality app that families will find valuable and useful. It’s organized and includes a number of features that make it indispensable in the kitchen. The photography is outstanding, and each recipe includes an appetizing photograph to make recipe selection a snap. Developers used a tile navigation system. The main page shows rotating examples from each category, and category title pages show vivid shots of each dish on tiles. It’s easy to see what looks good!
And when you find something you like, it’s easy to save as a favorite, or share your discovery via social media or email. You can save recipes as PDFs to your favorite ereader, add to your Notes section, and even hook up with Apple’s Reminders system to put needed ingredients on your grocery list.

Very Veggie truly shines in this category. The app includes a powerful search feature that allows users to search by ingredient, recipe title, and even features such as gluten free or vegan. The recipes include all of the standard features of internet recipes, such as nutritional information (pull down on the photograph at the top of the recipe), number of servings, preparation time, and so forth. They also include notations about special categories they belong in (such as vegan or gluten-free), and whether the finished product freezes well for later use. Developers included a handy timer right on each page, so you can monitor your preparation time, plan your dishes’ completion times, or keep track of baking time.
Alternating steps in the recipe directions are highlighted in a light grey, making it a snap to keep your place as you cook. There is also a check-off system, but I couldn’t figure out how to access it completely. If you slide the direction step to the right, there is a check off symbol, but I could not figure out how to keep the check mark visible after I finished the step. All in all, though, there are a LOT of features that could make this app a favorite.
