The Berenstain Bears are headed on a car trip in this illustrated ebook about the popular family of bears. Kids can go along for the ride while they listen to a narrator or read the book themselves. They’ll find highlighted text, tappable words, and classic Berenstain Bears illustrations accompanied by peppy background music and sound effects. Kids won’t find animated animations or a lot of other features designed to entertain them, but they’ll still get access to a classic story that they will enjoy.

Oceanhouse Media ebooks are known for their quality and this book is no exception. However, it has a few surprising flaws. When kids go to turn the page, they may find that the book is not as responsive as they would like. They’ll also notice that the page selector doesn’t actually include all of the pages in the book, so while kids may think they’re actually selecting the final page of the book, they’ll actually have a few more pages to go. Aside from that, the narration is clear, although it may be a bit fast for younger readers. The background sound is engaging, but quiet enough not to distract from the text.
The book features text highlighting and tappable pictures and images. Many of the tappable words in the story are designed to focus on the early elementary level. Kindergarten and first grade students may find a lot of new words, while second and third grade students will more easily read through the story and enjoy its theme.
The lack of animation makes the book a little less exciting for kids. Thankfully, it has the benefit of classic Berenstain Bears illustrations to capture kids’ attention. Kids can also choose from three different options for reading the book, including one option that allows them to record their own narration. Since there are multiple characters in the book, kids can experiment with funny voices to help make the story more exciting.
Considering the story does not come with animated illustrations or any games for kids to enjoy, it does not offer the best value for the price. However, for parents who want to build up their child’s virtual ebook collection, it’s a solid choice to add to the shelf.
Unfortunately, most Oceanhouse Media ebooks contain a lot of features to distract kids. At the end of the story, a “rate this app” button pops up. The main screen of the book also contains an info icon, a more apps icon, and an icon leading to the OM Bookshelf. While all of these are protected areas, it’s still a bit annoying to see them featured so prominently on each book, including this Berenstain Bears title.
