When it comes to being creative, most kids don’t need any help. So rather than helping kids express themselves creatively, Lazoo Art Box seeks to broaden their creative horizons. Through its imaginative prompts and different drawing modes, kids can create fun pieces of art, many of which actually come to life when they’re finished drawing.
- Five different creative modes
- A palette full of drawing tools
- Fun animated drawings
- Engaging sound effects and background music
Kids will find it very easy to get started. Whenever they open a new area of the game, they’re shown a short tutorial on what to do. They are then given a prompt that is read aloud and highlighted as it is read, so they know exactly what to do. Once they draw, the play button really animates what the kids draw. It doesn’t worry so much about kids staying in the lines, but instead rewards any effort with something fun. The only downside is there doesn’t appear to be a way to save all of the fun drawings kids create.
While this app does not focus on any academic skills, it encourages kids to think creatively. Many of the modes contain prompts for kids to respond to. For example, they must decide what is coming out of the elephants trunk or draw squiggles on lollipops. These kinds of activities help kids learn to think outside of the box and help them later on when it comes to writing stories or completing other creative tasks. The app also includes written and verbal instructions and includes text highlighting to help kids learn a few words as they play.
Kids will have a lot of fun completing the prompts in funny ways. For example, they may give people crazy purple hair or help rockets blast off with zany squiggles. They can create animated drawings in three main modes: squiggle, color, and draw. Kids who want a little more creative freedom can also simply draw on a blank page or take a photograph and draw on top of it.
Even though the prompts stay the same, every time the kids open the app, their experience will be a little bit different. The different modes of play, along with the extensive palette of colors, tools, stickers, and other art supplies will give kids endless opportunities to create new works of art.
All of the imaginative prompts are kid-friendly and geared towards the preschool and kindergarten ages. One mode does give kids access to the device’s camera, but it does not save the photos children take. A protected parent area provides a bit of background for the app and links to social media. Kids will also see a protected More Apps icon at the top right-hand corner of the main screen.
