Quality

Attributes by Math Doodles is a very high quality app.  It is highly intuitive to use, so children of nearly any age can understand what they need to do.  The exercises are well-thought-out, increasing in difficulty so gradually that most users will hardly even notice as they move on to more complex problems.

Education

Attributes by Math Doodles will take players where few math students have gone before.  The app does an outstanding job of putting fun into math. Players sort and categorize fanciful objects while expanding their minds to take in multiple attributes at the same time.  The seven games are arranged in order of difficulty, and within each game, there are ten levels.  The app generates puzzles randomly, so users can have nearly infinite possibilities as they practice.  There are also four challenge levels for each section, so users can choose the level of quick thinking that is most comfortable, and increase the degree of challenge as they build skills.

On the surface, it looks deceptively easy.  The first challenges require players to sort shapes on colored backgrounds by color and by shape.  Each category has a ratio that gives a clue about correct placement of the items.  For example, if three items are needed in the category and one of the three currently in place is correct, the ratio reads “1/3”.  When one incorrect item is replaced by a correct one, the ratio changes to “2/3.”

Underneath, Attributes by Math Doodles is really building foundational concepts that math students need for working out complex problems and also for developing that deep intuitive understanding of how math “works.”  As children head into upper elementary, middle and high school, they work more and more with patterns in math, and this app will help them consider multiple aspects and small details when examining everything from silly pictures to complex problems.  The levels work their way through attending to one attribute at a time to multiple attributes.  The more complex problems even leave off the category names and the players must deduce which items belong together.  All in all, it’s an outstanding example of application of higher-level thinking.

Entertainment

This game is positively addictive in nature.  Each round is quick and seemingly easy, and so it’s very tempting to play “just one more.”  The incremental increase in difficulty is so slight that most people hardly realize the items are getting progressively harder.  There are several different types of illustrations in play, as well.  Some look like buildings, others like bugs, and still others like twisting ribbons.  You never know which type of figure will be presented.  Each level has a different format, too.  Players begin by simply sorting items into a chart, and move through placing them on increasingly complex matrices, Venn diagrams, and more.

Value

This app is an excellent value. Its $2.99 cost is well-worth the investment, since it not only provides valuable higher-level thinking skills practice, but it manages to do so in a creative and fun manner.  Players can be nearly any age, and most will quickly become addicts-the game is fun!  It’s not often that we find something that is so much fun and good for you at the same time.

Child Friendliness

It’s hard to get more child-friendly than this app is.  The game is intended for middle elementary students, but it is quite acceptable for nearly any age group that is old enough to pay attention to more than one aspect of pictures at the same time.
