Overview

“Ten Giggly Gorillas swinging in the trees, putting on a show for the cheeky chimpanzees…” This delightful rhyming story of ten gorillas is a fun story with numerous interactive objects for our curious little ones to touch as they explore. As the story progresses one gorilla at a time decides to leave until… No, I am not going to give away the ending. It will ruin the story!

Features include:

  • Read to Me and Read to Myself story options
  • Delay interactions feature for the Read to Me option
  • Memory card game

 Quality

Ten Giggly Gorillas has been designed with young children in mind. The interface is simple and uncluttered so that little ones can find their way to the story and match game. The developers didn’t forget about e-book features adults desire.

In addition to the adorable gorillas, music and sounds, there are two options for enjoying the story; read to me and read to myself. Text is located nicely on the page and is easy to read. Narration and highlighting of the text work well together.

The match game is a nice extension of the story being it uses characters from the book on the cards.

Other features that make this a nice app are the protection of menus meant for parents, in-app instructions or help, a delay interactions feature for the Read to Me option and the navigation buttons. Not only are there page arrows, but there is an icon at the top of the page with a number of options, too; such as Read Again, Turn Off Read to Me, Delay Interactions and Play Game.

Areas for improvement:

  • The gorillas look too much like monkeys and the match game is called monkey match.
  • Navigation within the book is basic and needs improving.
  • Add the ability to repeat the narration (and highlighting) by touching the paragraph.
  • Add a button on the main screen to take the user directly into the match game.
  • Change the Play button (on the navigation menu) to go directly into the match game.

Education

This e-book offers a number of educational possibilities in addition to the story options. The book could be used as an entertaining way to introduce or reinforce counting backwards by one, or listening and following directions.

Finding the toucan on each page of the story will require readers to pay attention to all of the details in the picture. The toucan is easier to find on some pages than others.

The match game is another great educational tool for working on memory skills and so much more.

Entertainment

This app earns high marks for entertainment due to the large number of interactions the reader can make. Each page of the book allows for the reader to touch all of the gorillas on the page and find the toucan. Touching the gorillas can be done numerous times. I like when kids are able to repeat the interactions over and over again (because I like to, also!). The interactions in the book are all related to the story and do not detract from it.

The match game offers additional entertainment. It could be played alone or with a friend.

Value

Ten Giggly Gorillas is a good quality app with many of the desired e-book features adults and children desire. The addition of the numerous interactive objects, such as gorillas, flowers and toucan, and the match game make the app more reasonably priced.

Child Friendly

Designed for kids 2 to 6 years old, the app is enjoyable and easy to use for kids of all ages.

The app has a protected menu for parents which is where you will find social media buttons and links. Buttons are also located at the end of the story, but are protected in a way that should prevent most users from accessing them. Ten Giggly Gorillas does not contain in-app purchases or ads.
