I am not an expert in special needs apps, so I don’t feel qualified to review them. However, I know it’s important to our readers, so I wanted to build a resource that enables you to sort special needs apps by price, rating and to get further information via the AppStore.

This list focusses on visual communication apps that work well for non-verbal or speech delayed children. If you want to get expert reviews on special needs apps I recommend you check out http://a4cwsn.com/

This is just a start and I know I will have missed out numerous apps for visual communication, please leave a comment with apps that I have left out and I will add them to the list.

I will recommend to add Picture AAC (http://heartyspin.com/solutions/pictureaac/) to your list. Many children with autism are visual learners and using pictures to teach and support them in communication has proven to be effective. I like Picture AAC app because it works like PECS communication board, simple and at same time very useful. It comes with pictures of common items, feelings, instructions. The app has 2 training levels to progressively introduce just 1 picture then 2 differentiating pictures. I can create a group, sort and include only relevant pictures and add my own voice.

  2. We’d love to see So Much 2 Say on your list. http://www.somuch2say.com
It’s only $24.99 Developed specifically for non-verbal individuals with multiple disabilities. Great for those new to AAC. Very easy to customize to individual needs.

  3. A lot of parents with special need kids (especially non-verbal) wrote me that they love Word Wizard app which uses one of the best text to speech engine on iOS. and it is $2.99 for the holidays…
