Overview

Sudokids is an app designed to help beginning Sudoku players master the concepts of the game. It offers fifteen minutes of free daily play, puzzles that begin with four by four grids and progress through six by six grids. The hardest levels offer traditional nine by nine grid puzzles. There are an assortment of features to guide inexperienced players, such as hints and duplicate number highlighting.

Features include:

  • Three puzzle sizes
  • Four levels of difficulty with each puzzle size
  • Free daily puzzles
  • Fifteen minutes of play daily with free version
  • Daily challenges, battle Sudoku, and motivational stamps

Quality

Sudokids is a high quality app. Developers have included several adaptations to make learning Sudoku easier, and to motivate game play. There is a tutorial that plays at the beginning of the puzzle sequence and a more detailed tutorial in the protected parents’ section.

Education

The game of Sudoku is highly educational no matter which app is used. It encourages logical thinking, memory, attention to detail, and reasoning. This particular app is ideal because it is set up to teach strategies for puzzle solving, as well. By starting players out with the four by four grid, each puzzle can easily be solved visually. The daily free puzzles provided gradually increase in difficulty level through several versions of the 4 x 4 puzzle, then several rounds of the 6 x 6 puzzle, and finally to the 9 x 9 puzzle grid.

Developers have also done a fine job of adding tools that will help younger players get the hang of the game. There is an optional “hint” button, as well as automatic highlighting of duplicate numbers when these are accidentally put in place. The memo function allows players to make notes about which numbers MIGHT belong in a given square. There is an erase function and even a clear all function that allows players to start over if they’ve gotten off track with their answers. All in all, players are set up to have a successful experience as they learn.

Entertainment

Sudoku puzzles are pretty intrinsically motivating, but there are some added features of this particular app that might be appealing to more experienced players. First is the feature to play “Battle Sudoku” where you pit your puzzle solving abilities against other players, based on the number of correctly placed numbers you can lock in before the time limit expires. Competition can be quite motivating!

There are also badges and stickers to collect and levels to conquer in this app. This can help keep players engaged long after they have passed the beginner stage.

Value

SudoKids is a great value. The app has a free version that is available on the App Store. In the free version, players can access the daily puzzles and can play for fifteen minutes daily. This is great to find out if your user likes this puzzle type and if the app’s tools and features help him or her learn how to solve Sudoku puzzles. If users like the game, there are two subscription plans available via protected in-app purchase. The monthly subscription runs $1.49 per month and the annual version is $8.99 per year. Either is a great bargain for the amount of puzzles and the features if you have one or more players who enjoy the challenge of Sudoku on a regular basis.

Child Friendliness

SudoKids is mostly child-friendly. The app includes a protected parents area that is controlled by a multiple choice division problem. Children in about fourth grade and up may be able to defeat it. The protected area includes the in-app purchase, just so parents are aware. The app also defaults to the parent gate when the daily time limit is reached, which may tempt some young players to try to make the purchase. There is also a ratings pop up that appears randomly.

  • YES external links in protected area
  • NO social media
  • NO 3rd party ads
  • YES in-app purchase but behind a parent gates (math)

SudoKids is a great app for teaching younger and less experienced players how to manage the puzzles independently. The smaller starter puzzles, the in-app features like highlighted duplicate numbers and hints, and the controlled levels of difficulty all set players up for success.
