Manuel’s Socks is a very high quality app that will delight young users in many ways. The art work is wonderfully unique, being made to look like the show is being performed by stick puppets on a stage. It’s colorful and fun, and touching the character puppets causes them to perform random actions that young children will find very silly, such as twirling their legs. The app is very responsive, and the activities work well with no delays. All in all, this is a very well-designed app!
This app does a wonderful job of conveying some very positive values that most children need to hear a few times to incorporate them into their lives. It’s a fun presentation of such gems as “you are valuable just the way you are” and “be yourself.” It focuses on dealing with real feelings when there are perceived differences, and shows practical ways to overcome those feelings. Kudos to the developers!
As an added bonus, the story pauses a few times to allow children to respond to comprehension questions about the section they just finished. The questions’ format is somewhat unique-kids can hear the story and are presented with a few picture choices. Tapping the speaker near each one will voice what they are. Choose the correct one, and any remaining incorrect answers turn into stars for the user’s collection. Choose an incorrect one, and that one is eliminated with a gentle reminder to think about the story again. After the entire story is finished, players have the option of reading again, answering randomized questions, or creating their own stick puppets on the screen to play with.
Manuel’s Socks is a fun app that will entertain children in several different ways. The pictures on each page are interactive: users can touch the puppets and they respond in one of several random movements. Between sections of the story, comprehension questions are presented to gauge understanding, and choosing the correct answer releases a shower of confetti and also earns one or two stars for the collection at the top of the screen. At the end of the story, players have a choice of hearing or reading again, answering random comprehension questions, or assembling and playing with any one of the character puppets from the ebook.
This app is a great value at $2.99 in the App Store. The story presents some wonderful character concepts, it’s engaging and fun, and it offers additional activities that will entice children to continue playing.
