The Clangers have brought their planet to the smartphones and tablets of Earth. These pink, mouse-like creatures, may seem a bit odd to those who have not experienced their children’s show on the BBC, CBeebies and Sprout, but for those who are familiar with The Clangers, the app will seem very familiar. As kids spin around the Clangers’ planet, they get to interact with Mother, Small, Major, Tiny, and Granny in a selection of simple games and activities.
- 3D, spinnable world
- Popular Clangers characters
- Multiple games and activities
- Available in UK and US English
Fans of the Clangers series will note that the app captures the feel of the series well. Kids will recognize similar background music and narration. The app also features a rotating planet that kids can move to locate the different activities. At times the planet moves a little too fast, so kids must be prepared to go back and forth a few times to get to the activity they want. Once within the activities, verbal and non-verbal instructions help kids understand what to do. Some of the activities work well, while others, such as the pea gathering and shape shifting can frustrate kids because they are too sensitive and make it hard for kids to complete the tasks.
This app is not being rated for education.
One of the most entertaining aspects of the app is the ability to spin the planet. As kids spin it around they’ll find different characters and activities to enjoy. The activities themselves are fairly simplistic. In one activity, kids simply open doors to find characters in a game of hide and seek. In another, they listen to a bunch of Eggbots make sounds and must work to repeat the tunes they play. All of the games are fairly intuitive and designed so that even toddlers can enjoy them.
Parents of young Clangers fans will find a lot of value in this app that lets kids interact with their favorite characters. For those unfamiliar with the Clangers, the app’s simplistic games and activities compare to those found in a much lower-priced app.
Toddlers and preschoolers will find themselves spinning the planet and enjoying the various activities contained within the app. There is a “More Apps” button that bounces up and down in the bottom corner of the screen, but parents can turn it off in the protected parent area.
