  • Instructional videos
  • Progress bar to encourage continued practice
  • Progress report available
  • Connections to teacher, tutor or mentor if desired

Quality

CK-12 is a high quality app that contains a LOT of content. Each subject and grade level is broken down into concepts commonly covered in the course, and each concept has a question bank and an instructional video. The app keeps records for the user, but will only work for one. Once the user name is changed once, it cannot be changed again.  It does require an active connection to the internet to work, however.  Developers should at least consider incorporating a method to reset the app if desired, and ideally, a system to keep records for multiple users.

Education

CK-12 offers a wealth of practice material that will help students study math and science concepts they are currently covering in school, those they wish to review, and those that strike their interest to preview.  Each concept has an optional reading and review video, and practice multiple choice questions. The app sets a goal of answering 10 questions correctly and keeps score in a visible window.  Questions that are answered incorrectly are re-presented later in the activity.

Many of the practice questions involve application of concepts and ideas.  This higher-level thinking is important for school success, and is well-placed in this app.  Many school tasks involve analysis and application, and questions that just call for rote memorization of information are not enough to build the skills needed for success.

At the bottom of each question screen, users can find a virtual whiteboard for calculations and a hints section.  There is also a link to “improve this question” if any issues are found, such as an incorrect response marked as correct or a misspelled word.  It’s nice to have a means to provide specific feedback.

Entertainment

This app is not really intended to be entertaining, but it has features that will help students want to keep using it.  The app displays the number of questions correct, the student’s progress through the exercise, and the amount of time spent practicing.  It even keeps track of “streaks” where the student answers multiple questions correctly in a row.

Value

This is a free app, and loaded to the gills with great practice information for students.  It would be tough to find a better value to help them review, especially in the middle and high school.  The app also would be a good source of information for students needing remedial assistance.

Child Friendliness

This app is fairly child-friendly.  It does require an active connection to the internet to work, and it does contain one unprotected link to the web, as well as a sign-in system that is tied to the device’s profile or email.
