This app is produced by Oceanhouse Media, and their dedication to quality production shows throughout the app. From the fun and interesting story to the engaging graphics and appropriate features, every part of the app shows that it was truly created with young readers in mind. The story features both a “Read to Me” and a “Read by Myself” option, perfect for all ages and stages in the process of learning to read. The voice overs and sound accompaniments are professionally created and perfectly suited for the story.
Dr. Seuss’s books are well known for their educational value, and this book is no different. The fun rhymes and interesting illustrations keep kids engaged. The rhyming words used in the text encourage children by making reading fun, and these rhyming words also serve as cues for struggling readers who may have trouble deciphering words.
This particular story is quite educational. As you may know, many of Dr. Seuss’s Cat in the Hat books are strictly fun word plays, but this one focuses on facts from the sea. It introduces users to things like sea levels, the food chain, and how fish use gills to breathe.
While the story itself is entertaining enough, what I really enjoyed in this app are the fun graphics. As the Cat in the Hat and the children journey throughout the sea in search of fish, the entire screen comes alive. Fish swim, waves crash, submarines float, and water bubbles. As with other Oceanhouse Media apps, this app makes use of zooming, so that when there are pages with large amounts of text, the reader is not sitting and looking at a static page. Instead, zoom is used to give an additional feeling of movement as the reader progresses through the text on the page.
Children are exposed to a wealth of scientific information, presented in a fun and engaging way through the tale of a beloved character.
This app features easy navigation for children. Pages are flipped with just a touch to the forward button, and the home screen is easily accessible from every page.
While the main page of the app does link to other Cat in the Hat story apps, these are protected. When touching one of these additional stories, a popup screen appears, telling users that this section is for parents only. Directions are given to the parent to access the story app on the App store. Ideally, the ratings popup that appears at the end of the story would be removed.
