One of kids’ favorite Christmas movies has taken the form of an animated eBook. While the narrator sounds little like Sam the Snowman, Oceanhouse Media’s version of the story of the popular red-nosed reindeer comes complete with images and sound effects from the popular movie. Jingle bells in the background and the holiday-themed scenes will definitely put kids in the Christmas spirit as they read through this classic story in a less-than-classic form.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer features Oceanhouse Media’s trademark style. While some may be disappointed that the narration doesn’t sound like the narration in the actual movie, it’s still clear and easy for kids to understand when choosing the Auto Play and Read to Me options. Kids can also choose the Read to Myself option to read the story without narration. The book also features images, voices, and other sounds from the iconic movie. While an asset to the book, the sounds themselves can sometimes interrupt the narration and be hard for kids to discover. They feel more like they were just added in rather than seamlessly fit into the story, but they’re still nice to have.
As kids listen to the story, they’ll find text-highlighting and the ability to tap on keywords to hear them read aloud. The three reading options (Read to Me, Read to Myself, and Autoplay) allow kids to experience the book at their own pace. The story is a bit long, so some kids may want to return to it more than once to finish reading through the entire thing. A pages feature makes it easy for them to start right back where they left off.
There’s not a lot of animation in the story, but kids will be treated to the voices of Rudolph and his friends, as well as the sounds of jingle bells as they read through the story. The story itself is a classic, so it’s fairly engaging for kids, but it is a little long so they may not last through the entire thing in one sitting. Still they’ll want to come back and finish it because it’s one of those classic Christmas stories that kids love.
The app is priced slightly higher than many Oceanhouse Media apps, likely because it features Rudolph and his friends. If you want a good Christmas story to read with your kids, it’s worth the download, especially because you’ll get to reminisce about your own fun watching the Rudolph movie as a kid.
The story itself is very child friendly, but some of Oceanhouse Media’s other features may make it less appealing to parents. The parent info section is protected by a parental block, but other sections are not. For example, kids can click on the icon for Oceanhouse Media’s bookshelf and the More Apps icons to gain access to the App Store. They’re also prompted to rate the app at the end of the story. This features could be troubling to some parents if the app is used without supervision or if parents haven’t added proper password protection to their devices.
