Spellyfish Short A Words is another great phonics app that teaches children to spell and sound out various short words. This user friendly app makes learning fun with an engaging underwater theme and characters that are very well done. For little ones needing some practice with reading and spelling, this app is a great as it provides hints and assistance to help children along. This is one app you don’t want to miss for your preschooler.

Features include:

  • Hint feature
  • Multiple user option
  • 8 Lessons
  • Great illustrations

Spellyfish Short A Words is very similar to the other Spellyfish apps and allows children to learn in an easy to use environment. It seems like the developers have thought of everything when it comes to these apps because not only are the illustrations, sound effects, and animations incredibly well done, but the additional educational features make it easy for children to learn. Along with the introduction lesson, children also have the ability to use the hint function, backspace, and can get assistance from Spellyfish as they move through the app.

It is always nice to find phonics apps that are engaging and educational and the Spellyfish apps are excellent for early learners. Not only are children able to move through 8 lessons, but they are exposed to various short words and are taught to sound out the word in order to spell it. As they tap each letter, Spellyfish will sound it out, reinforcing the concept. For children who may be stuck on a particular word, they can use the hint function that will sound out the word and provide a list of letters that make that word to help them along. Each lesson is also broken down into different themes. For instance, the first lesson are all ‘at’ words and the fifth lesson are all ‘s’ words.

An added bonus for this app is the progress option that allows parents and teachers to track the progress of each profile that is set up. This provides information on correct words versus their attempts, words that are mastered etc. There is also a great customizable option at the beginning of the app that allows parents and teachers to set the number of times a child has to get an answer correct to “master” it as well as many other options.

While many educational apps tend to lack a bit of entertainment, there is something about the Spellyfish apps that really keep children engaged. On top of the awesome illustrations and sound effects, children who enjoy challenges and goal oriented apps will enjoy this one. While there isn’t a dedicated entertainment activity, it is good for keeping children engaged in their lessons.

Priced at just under a dollar this app is a steal! Not only do you get up to 40 game profiles (which is great for usage in the classroom), you also get an innovative and engaging app that is fun for kids and great for learning. I’d say that is a great deal!

Child Friendliness

This intuitive and easy to use app is great for children of all ages. The sound effects and illustrations really stand out and keep children engaged and the introduction and hint features ensure children won’t get stuck in any one area. Parents and teachers will also be happy to know there are no social media links or in app purchases to be concerned with. There are however buttons for more information and an option to email the developers however this area is protected.
