Stack the Countries, by Dan Russell-Pinson, has been chosen as the #2 geography app by our readers.

If you are like me, it’s been a while since you had a world geography class and many changes have taken place since then. What better way to brush up on your world geography than with this universal app. I wish we would have had a tool like this for learning world geography!

Overall Design

Stack the Countries is similar in design to Stack the States; beautiful backgrounds, lively music, adorable characters, on-screen instructions, and the ability to create multiple user profiles. Multiple profiles mean this app could easily be used for a family or school. One setting that is different is that there are three languages (English, Spanish and French) available in the app.

And yes, Stack the Countries is easy to use on any idevice. The design allows you to touch the smallest of the countries on a map, even on an iPod!

Learn

The app contains content for 193 countries so if you are a little rusty on your world geography you may want to hit this section first!

The Learn section is divided into two parts; interactive maps and flash cards, which can be used interchangeably. If you choose interactive maps, choose a continent and then a country, the choice to use the flashcard to learn more is available or you can touch the view map and it goes back to the interactive map. On the flashcards, various facts are available; such as the flag, capital, language, border countries, major cities, and landmarks and so on. It’s a great way to learn about each of the countries. There are great navigation features built into this area making it easy to move around.

Play Games

This section has three games; Stack the Countries, Map It, and Pile Up. Stack the Countries is the main game used to earn countries, which then unlock the bonus games.

Stack the Countries – The user builds a stack of countries by answering questions about the countries. As with Stack the States, there’s a little more to it. You are rewarded the country for which you answered the question correctly, you need to stack that country on top of the others and so on until your stack reaches the checkered line WITHOUT it tipping over. Good thing the countries can be rotated; you’ll need to be creative in your stacking.

Two really nice features for this section are that you can select the types of questions you want to be asked and do you want to be asked questions for just one continent or the whole world. If you choose to be asked questions for one continent then the countries you earn will be for that continent.

Map It – You are presented with a country and you must touch the correct location of that country on the map of the continent. Try to complete the map before receiving three strikes. You receive a strike for each incorrect answer.

Pile Up – Quickly tap the correct country to remove it from the pile. You want to remove all of the countries from the pile before they reach the checkered line.

My Countries

In the My Countries option, you see an interactive map of the countries you have earned, by continent, during the Games portion of the app. Countries can be touched and facts are presented.

If you want to try out Stack the Countries before purchasing the full version, a lite version is available for download in iTunes.
