When it comes to building reading skills, I can’t get enough apps in my kids hands. The new Sight Words with Word Bingo app puts more than 140 words together in one app, and makes learning them fun. Let’s see if it passes my parent test.
The Good
There are definitely some good things about the Sight Words 2 app. The word variety is pretty good. It breaks words into two categories: first and second grade, and does a solid job of following educational standards. The app’s Word Tour section allows kiddos to hear and see words spelled out. Once the learning is complete, it’s on to the app’s word games for lots of practice and reinforcement.
Find n Shoot, Unscramble, Memory Game and Bingo all feature an easy and hard level. And there’s even a Red Words section where you can flag trouble word for easy review.
The Bad
Unfortunately, there are a few downsides to the app. First and foremost, there are two links on the app’s main page that lead out of the app, a big red flag for me and mine. The graphics are a bit basic and uninspiring. Also, my kiddos ran into a few errors in the app. After playing the Unscramble game for a little while, the app’s audio gave out, making it very hard to hear the word the game was asking them to unscramble. I had to force close the game a few times to fix the issue. The app also closed itself when we hit the home button once or twice. And that was all before they’d even been playing very long.
Bottom line
For $1.99 the Sight Words 2 is a fair value. With a few adjustments and updates it could be something special. Great for word practice, with a little supervision.
