Bobo Explores Light

Available in the App Store

Bobo is a delightful little robot who guides you through a book covering many topics relating to light. He is so cute that you will find yourself laughing along with him at times.

There is an in-app tutorial available. I found the tutorial to be short enough that you could remember everything they told you without being boring. The tutorial is a nice feature, but my kids didn’t bother with it and had no problem figuring out the app. The app has a table of contents which makes it easy to move around or to stop and start the app. A table of contents is a must for a book covering this many topics.

This app is recommended for kids 8-12. However, young or old can have fun moving Bobo around the screen or checking out all of the objects to touch on the screen. Due to it’s length, younger kids may get bored. It is not an app you can sit down and go through quickly. There are just too many things to see and do! The user can grow tomatoes, make a forest lush and green, play with lasers and holograms, to name just a few. The fun facts greatly enhance the learning experience. Such as, did you know “…that the sun’s storms are at their strongest in 2011 and 2012, so it’s good to look for auroras!” or “…Every invention has a patent, but most people go through their whole life without getting a patent”?

The developers have done a nice job using multiple methods to keep you engaged and entertained throughout the entire book. Besides the fun facts, holograms, and hands-on experiments that I’ve already mentioned, there are also short videos. I can still picture the one of the aurora borealis. It’s imagery was stunning!

The surprise at the end of the book is a great way to reward kids (adults, too) for completing the book! It’s a blast!
