Holidays

Overview

Holidays is a cute app for this time of year with 4 separate games for children to enjoy. With classic games like tic, tac, toe that are easy to learn and play, great illustrations, and fun music and sound effects, this app is great for young children.

Features include:

  • 4 Games
  • Easy to use
  • 3 Holiday themes included

Quality

The developers have done a great job creating an app that is easy to use and is very appealing to young children. Each game is easy to play without any elaborate instructions to be concerned with. The simple tap and touch methods used within each game makes for a very intuitive interface. The illustrations and background music are also very well done.

Education

While this isn’t your typical educational app it does include some fun logic & memory practice within the games. There is a game that requires children to locate the sleigh carrying a gift (out of three) that are scrambled with each play. This challenges children to watch the sleigh and to remember where it was located. There is also a game that challenges children to remember various sequences and repeat them back (much like the game Simon), which is great for memory practice.

Entertainment

With 4 easy to play games, this app offers lots of entertainment. The games are offered in a free-play set up that is easy to use and lots of fun for children. In addition to the games described above, there is a tic, tac, toe game as well as a catch me if you can activity that requires children to tap a particular character as they pop up on the screen. The longer you play, the difficulty increases requiring children to really pay attention. This added challenge adds a fun dynamic to this pretty straight forward app.

Value

Currently priced for just under a dollar this app is a steal. Not only do you get 4 games with the Christmas theme, but you also get 2 other holiday themes to choose from in the parent section, which parents can appreciate. This app can be used not only for Christmas, but also for Easter, and Halloween with a simple tap of a button.

Child Friendliness

Parents will also be happy to know that this app is completely safe for kids as there are no in app purchase links or accessible advertisements. All of the kid areas are completely free of buttons that might distract little ones. There is a parent area that allows you to change the holiday theme as well as limit the amount of time children can play the app. This area also has a few other apps by the same developer that are not protected however the main parent button is protected.

With that said, the games are easy to understand without a ton of instruction and the user interface is very intuitive so children should have no problem enjoying this app on their own.

Finn and Friends

App Info

Price: Free
AppStore User Rating: 4
Download on the App Store

Overview

While Finn & Friends is a promotional app for Goldfish crackers by Pepperidge Farm, it is actually a very good and child friendly app – and it’s free!

The Halloween story “The Case of the Mystifying Mummy” follows Finn and the other Goldfish friends as they sleuth their way through the story to find a mysterious figure that wakes Gilbert with a fright. Readers of different levels get to follow along and help the Goldfish detectives by playing mini-games.

The two other stories in the app, The Case of the Rainbow Tale, and The Case of the Missing Hamster are equally good fun.

Features include:

  • Read to Me
  • Read Myself
  • Autoplay
  • Word Highlighting
  • Mini games within the story
  • Themed Photo Booth with stickers and other decorations

Quality

This is a high quality app in every regard. Good visuals and narration bring the story to life, while fun extras such as photo booth and mini games add to the interactive experience.

Education

We feel that most books are educational on some level, as an interesting story promotes a love of reading. This book app appeals to both pre-readers and readers. With word highlighting in Read To Me and Auto Play modes, this app supports word recognition and vocabulary building for emerging readers.

Entertainment

The stories themselves are entertaining, but the interactive elements such as the mini games and themed photo booth make this an incredibly fun little app. Children will definitely enjoy photo booth, where they can take a photo and decorate with different themed stickers and frames (Halloween, Christmas, etc) before saving to the camera roll.

Value

What’s not to love about an app that is beautifully designed, entertaining and free?

Child Friendliness

While this app is one big advertisement for Goldfish crackers, it is never feels like it. There is even an “Ad Nooze” graphic in the corner of the home screen telling you that it is an ad.

There are no external links, in-app purchases or social media. Apart from the characters themselves, there’s no Pepperidge Farm or Goldfish crackers logo or other branding.

The app is getting a lower score because it is a promotional app for the Pepperidge Farm brand.

Overview

Zombie-loving kids rejoice! Math Vs Zombies 2 gives kids a way to get their fill of zombies while building their math skills at the same time. This isn’t your typical blood and guts, brain-eating zombie app. Instead, kids will encounter cartoonish zombies who love to eat donuts and other sweets. Correctly solving math problems, involving a range of skills, such as addition, subtraction, and greater than/less turns the zombies back into adorable children. The more problems solved, the more kids saved.

Features include:

  • 7 math topics
  • Progress tracking
  • Multiple levels of play
  • Eerie zombies and background music

Quality

Math Vs Zombies 2 definitely has the feel of an eerie zombies app. As kids navigate through the app, they’ll encounter mysterious background music, random screams, and spooky zombies. Rather than being scary, however, the whole app is a bit comical and cartoonish, making ideal for a wide age range and perfect for kids who want to interact with zombies, but are typically scared of the whole creepy Halloween scene. The quality of the app extends to the games, which are clearly organized by skill and by level, making it easy for kids to find the skill they want to practice and track their progress as they complete levels.

Education

Inside the app, kids will find 7 different skills and 84 different levels. Skills covered include basic counting, greater than/less than, addition, subtraction, plus or minus, multiplication, and division. Kids start on level one of each skill and the problems increase in difficulty as they advance through the levels. Parents and teachers will appreciate the report card feature which allows them to quickly see a kids’ progression by skill and grade-level, tracking their performance based on Common Core math standards too. A special parent section also gives adults suggestions for how to use the app with kids.

Entertainment

While the app offers 7 different skills and multiple levels, many of the games are the same. Kids will love changing the zombies into kids by answering questions, but they will probably get a bit bored if they play the game for long periods at a time. In most of the games, kids just answer questions and zap zombies as they walk along a road. It’s a lot of fun, but can get repetitive after a while.

Value

Math Vs Zombies 2 covers a wide range of grade levels and skills. Designed for ages 5-11, kids even younger than 5 and older than 11 may also benefit from the app. Add to that the ability to track kids’ progress based on individual skills and with regard to the Common Core standards and the app offers a lot of value. Despite that value, it still comes with a pretty high price tag.

Child Friendliness

Some parents may be hesitant to let their kids play a game involving zombies, but this game is less scary zombies and more fun, cartoonish zombies. The zombies don’t seek out people and attempt to eat their brains. Instead, they’re adorable child zombies that can’t wait to be zapped and turned into even cuter little kids. Beyond the zombie aspect, the game is very child friendly, keeping kids focused on the games and using a parental block to keep them from accessing parent information.

Overview

Spooky Letters offers young learners a chance to practice tracing capital, lower case and cursive letters. The app also features games and activities that will help children review basic phonics sounds, all with a Halloween theme.

Features include:

  • Practice for manuscript capital, manuscript lower case, and lower case cursive letters
  • Review of letter sounds and key words
  • Halloween theme
  • Gentle correction for inaccurate tracing
  • Access puzzles and words for completed letters any time

Quality

Spooky Letters is a good app to build fine motor skills, practice letter recognition and formation, and develop phonemic awareness. The app is intuitive to use, and includes parent directions as well as an option to reset the app so students can play again and again. Young learners will be encouraged to be accurate in their tracing and avoid rushing because missing even one of the guiding dots will cause the letter to reset and force the student to begin again. There are at least two misspellings in the system, as well. Quetzalcoatl is misspelled as “quezacoatal” and Jabberwocky is misspelled as “jabbawocky.” I did not see any reference to British variations in the spellings of these words, but they are so unusual that young children are not likely to notice.

Education

This app is designed with young learners and those with dyslexia in mind. Students choose the format of letters to practice. The app shows the letter’s formation, then prompts the learner to connect the guiding dots to trace the letter accurately. After tracing each letter, there is a short reward activity that varies based on the form of the letter being traced. Tracing lower case manuscript or cursive letters successfully will cause an animated picture of a Halloween key word (such as R for Robot or B for Bat) to appear. The player can then trace a dot-to-dot version. Tracing capital manuscript letters triggers a spelling game. Players unscramble a two- or three-letter word while listening to the sounds of each letter. When all of the letters in the group are completed, there is another reward sequence that can be activated.

Parents should be aware that this app is designed for a British audience, so the words and instructions are voiced with a British accent. There are also a few drawbacks that may be detrimental to some learners, as well. The female voice that names the key words is frequently unclear, making it somewhat difficult to unscramble the words. For example, the word “ant” completely omits the final /t/ sound, and the word “tap” sounds very much like “pat.” The /s/ sound is particularly problematic in this regard, as well as many ending consonants. Another concern is that some of the key words chosen are not phonetically regular. The word “owl” for example, is sounded out as long o, consonant /w/, /l/ which is very different than the /ow/ and /l/ sounds really needed. The narrator also says each sound twice as the words are being spelling, which could further confuse and disrupt learners who are having difficulty with the process. Parents should also be aware that the fonts used, especially for the cursive letters, differ somewhat from those typical taught in American schools. Cursive R and S, for example, are formed nearly like their manuscript counterparts, except they have added connecting lines. Finally, some children may be discouraged when they go to spell words with double letters, such as “zoo.” The system distinguishes between the two o’s, so there is a correct and an incorrect place for each one, which may confuse some learners since there is no visual difference between the two.

Entertainment

Spooky Letters does an outstanding job of highlighting a Halloween theme, which many young students will find motivating. Each key word is related to the theme, and the drawings are cute and often animated. Most of the key words are typical choices for the season, such as C for cat, and H for haunted house. Developers shake things up a bit by using words like “quezacoatal” and “jabbawocky.” The dot-to-dot picture activity is enjoyable, and the system gives a great deal of latitude in connecting the dots to create the complex pictures. Users can make errors, but as soon as the last dot has been connected, the original picture appears, which will please young children and give them a sense of accomplishment.

Value

This app will be a fun addition to your collection if you want to encourage young players to practice tracing letters with a thematic flair. It does a good job of providing practice in forming the letters, and has the added benefit of reinforcing phonics and sound segmentation and blending skills. With three different types of letters to trace, students can practice for several years’ worth of holidays!

However, parents should be aware of the app’s drawbacks before they purchase. Use caution if your student truly is dyslexic or experiencing other learning problems, because the different letter forms, the sometimes difficult and even inaccurate letter sounds, and the two misspelled words could cause more confusion for these students than necessary. It should be fine for students who are developing skills at the usual pace, and those who need practice with forming the letters carefully.

Child Friendliness

This app is very child-friendly. There are no in-app purchases, no outside advertisements, and no links to social media. The parents’ section is accessible to all users, but contains no outside links. There is a pop-up ad on the lower portion of the home screen that invites users to explore other apps by this developer, but access to the App Store is controlled by a parent gate requiring users to perform complex mental addition.

Overview

Wood Puzzle Halloween HD is a simple to use puzzle app that little ones will love. With awesome Halloween illustrations, fun background sounds, and multiple puzzles to complete, this app is a great addition to the Wood Puzzle series.

Features include:

  • 15 Puzzles
  • Auto option
  • Great illustrations
  • Easy to use

Quality

Wood Puzzle Halloween HD is a very simple to use app that little ones will love for all of the awesome illustrations and background music that the developers have included. The simple drag and drop functioning is very intuitive for young children to use and the auto mode option allows children to see each puzzle being put together automatically. While it is a simpler app for young children the developers have done a nice job overall with the graphics and easy to use interface.

Education

While this isn’t a highly educational app it does provide children some practice with their logic skills as they learn to piece each puzzle back together. The auto mode allows young children to watch as each puzzle is put together automatically. The rotation option can be used to make the puzzles a bit more difficult by making children rotate the pieces so they fit the puzzle correctly.

Entertainment

Wood Puzzle Halloween HD is a simple, but fun app that includes 15 puzzles for children to put together. The illustrations include pumpkins, a mummy, a witch, and lots of other cute costumes that help to keep children engaged as they play.

One of the app options is ‘reward sound’ however I didn’t notice any particular affirmative sounds as a reward. Adding a sticker album or an additional activity like a coloring page would add a bit of versatility in the app and increase the entertainment value a bit.

Value

Priced at just under two dollars this app isn’t one that will break the bank and when you consider the 15 puzzles and the awesome illustrations it is a good value.

Wood Puzzle Halloween HD is an iPad only app, an iPhone version is available for purchase in the App Store.

Child Friendliness

Wood Puzzle Halloween HD is not only fun, but also completely safe to use. There are no in app purchases or social media links to be concerned with and the only advertisement is a picture of the original wood puzzle app however it is not linked nor is it in the main playing area. The user interface is also very easy to use so parents can simply allow their children to explore and enjoy the app on their own without worry.

Entertainment

While there aren’t any additional educational games included in this app, the illustrations and sound effects that accompany each word make it engaging for young children. In the app itself there are also small information & settings buttons that allow parents to customize the app, but they too are protected.

Parents will also want to know that once players complete all of the words, they are brought to a page that includes other apps by the developer. Moving all of the ‘other app’ buttons to the settings area is a simple move that will make a huge difference in the child friendliness of this app.

There are a variety of cobwebs, witches, spiders, and other characters in this spooky world that are used within each game in a very creative way. The interface is also easy to use with simple tap and drag maneuvering to play each game it is easy for even little ones to play.

Education

What better time to learn about recycling than during Halloween when there is going to be lots of candy wrappers etc. to dispose of. Halloween Heroes is a great app that uses a fun game to teach children how to separate and dispose of paper, plastic, glass, and organic materials properly. By identifying the specific items in each game, they not only work on their coordination, but also their ability to determine what items should be recycled and which items should not. This is a great app for teaching responsibility and saving the planet.

In addition to the educational games there are also 10 other activities and tips that share fun recycling tips in a puzzle format. For instance, one tip says to skip the plastic treat bags and has a puzzle with a plastic back with candy. Children can not only use the information they have learned, but also have fun piecing the puzzles back together as well.

jigsaw-puzzle-with-monsters

App Info

Price: $2.99

Overview

Jigsaw Puzzle With Monsters is a cute puzzle app featured in our At-A-Glance: Halloween Apps For Kids post that allows children to put together various fun and silly creatures. This app is great for youngsters wanting to get into the spirit of Halloween with a little monster play.

Features include:

  • Easy to use
  • 12 Puzzles
  • Fun characters

Quality

This simple to use app includes some very creative monster images and names for children to play with. Each puzzle comes with a board for children to complete by simply tapping and dragging the pieces into place. The monster sound effects are done very well and aren’t too scary so little ones can easily enjoy this app without being afraid.

The only complaint I have is the method that is used to exit each puzzle to move back to the main page. The instructions state that there is an exit symbol on the screen in order to get back to the main menu, but I was unable to find it. There is a button in the top of the screen to go back to the main page but it is child protected so users have to touch the button twice to move on. This could be a little frustrating for young children as they don’t have the freedom to move on to the next puzzle.

Education

This app is not being reviewed for education.

Entertainment

This is a great app for little ones to get them excited about Halloween. The simple puzzles are not only fun to put together, but some of them can be quite a challenge as the number of puzzle pieces increase as players move further down the line. After each puzzle is put together correctly, the monster’s name appears at the bottom of the page and it makes a unique sound.

With the cute illustrations and fun sound effects, players are going to love piecing these puzzles back together.

Value

Priced at just under three dollars this app might be a bit much for some parents. There are 12 puzzles to complete, however there are no other activities for children to enjoy. Adding even one additional activity might help increase the value a bit. With that said, this is an app younger children can enjoy more than once because puzzles provide classic fun!

Child Friendliness

With no social media links or in-app purchases, this app is great for kids. The developers have done a nice job ensuring children can easily put the puzzle pieces together by dragging and dropping them in place. As children drag and drop the pieces into place, children will find the pieces expand a bit making it easier to place correctly. This really helps little ones get the pieces into the correct space.

The main page also shows a link to other apps by the same developer and the button is not protected, however the way they have it set up with a child lock in place, young children aren’t likely to get back to the main page without the help of an adult. This is one area parents will want to be aware of.

If you have seen any of the other Stella and Sam apps you know they are full of high quality illustrations and animations. Stella and Sam Halloween Band is no different as it offers a cute theme with a moon that howls, a bat that flies around the sky, and a little spider that will switch the characters around. The easy to use interface is also great for young children as it allows a simple tap and touch function to change instruments and to customize the music.

Education

This app is not being reviewed for education.

Entertainment

For children who love music and musical apps this one is great. Not only are there 6 different instruments to play with the band, but users can actually manipulate the volume and speed of the band music by moving the characters from side to side or up and down. If they want to take a particular character out of the music for a moment, they can tap the character twice and their musical contribution will be muted. As children are using their musical creativity to make their own beautiful music, they can also tap and touch the other various illustrations to hear some eery Halloween howls and screams that add a ton of character to this app.

Value

Priced at just under two dollars Stella and Sam Halloween Band is a very good deal. Not only do children have the opportunity to use their creativity in a free-play musical setting, but they have a variety of sounds and instruments to try out as well. For the musician in your home this app could easily become a favorite especially around this time of year.

Child Friendliness

Parents can rest assured knowing that this app is not only easy to use but also safe. With no social media links or in-app purchases, children can play and create music until their heart is content without getting unnecessarily distracted. There is a link to another Stella and Sam app on the main page that is protected so parents can rest assured knowing that children will be safe playing this app.

Peekaboo Trick or Treat

App Info

Price: $1.99
AppStore User Rating: 3.5

Overview

Peekaboo Trick or Treat is one of our featured apps in the Halloween Apps for Kids 2014 post.

It is a really cute, yet simple app for young children that will help to increase their vocabulary through a variety of classic Halloween characters dressed up for trick or treating. With an easy to use interface and great illustrations this educational app is appealing and fun!

Features include:

  • 14 Halloween characters and words
  • Cute theme
  • 2 Narrator options

Quality

Peekaboo Trick or Treat proves that even simple apps can include high quality images, animation, and lots of fun. This app includes whimsical interactive illustrations that include various Halloween characters like a witch, gorilla, werewolf, monster etc. These images are accompanied by eery music and sound effects that are great for young children as they are not too scary. With two narration options (child or adult voice) this app allows for slight customization as well.

Education

The main educational aspect of this app is to increase the vocabulary for children. As users open the haunted house doors to see how is lurking behind, they are greeted by a fun character as the word is posted and read. Not only does this help children learn new words, but they can also associate the various animations with the written word to practice their reading skills as well.

Entertainment

Peekaboo Trick or Treat is full of animated characters that young children will love. After they have opened the door for all 14 characters, they get to see the characters in a group dancing together. The images and illustrations are the most entertaining for younger children as they watch these silly creatures come to life. Parents have the option of selecting the “regular” play option or the “loop” that will continue cycling the characters through over and over again for hours of fun. While the set-up is fairly simple and aimed at younger children it might be nice to add another activity or game to add more entertainment value.

Value

Priced at under two dollars this app seems to be priced well though it would be nice to have an additional activity to add a bit more value. All-in-all parents will find their money is well spent as children giggle with delight as they learn new vocabulary words with this cute app.

Child Friendliness

Peekaboo Trick or Treat is aimed at young children so the set-up is very simple to use. As the spooky mansion door rattles, children must simply tap the door to open it so they can see who is hiding behind it. This simple tap and touch functioning is perfect for young children as it doesn’t require instructions at all.

There are no in-app purchases or social media links to be concerned with. The only advertisement is for additional apps by the developer and it is protected on the main page so parents can rest assured knowing this app is safe for little ones.

The Little Witch at School

App Info

Price: $3.99
AppStore User Rating:

Overview

The Little Witch at School is featured in our At-A-Glance: Halloween Apps For Kids post and is the prequel to the story “The Witch With No Name” and tells the tale of how this young witch lost her name. This app is so much more than a story as it has fun games, interactive scenes, and delightful illustrations that children of all ages will love. With a great combination of education and entertainment, this high quality app is one that should not be missed.

Features include:

  • Interactive illustrations
  • 3 Difficulty levels
  • Fun and educational activities
  • 3D images

Quality

The Little Witch at School goes above and beyond many apps I have seen as far as quality is concerned. Not only are there interactive illustrations, but the images are also in 3D. The narration, sound quality, and sound effects are great and they compliment the high tech illustrations very well. Children will absolutely love the story, the set-up, and the in-app games they can play with ease.

Education

In addition to the main story there are a variety of in-app educational games that children will love. One activity puts a fun twist on the paint by numbers concept by using addition problems. Each color coincides with a specific number (solution) and each area on the picture is a math problem. Children must add the numbers correctly in order to find the color that should go in that area. In addition to the math activity there is a trivia activity as well as a spelling activity for children to enjoy. With three different difficulty levels, the activities can be more or less challenging depending on the age of the child which is really nice.

One thing that I was surprised to find about this app is that there is no text highlighting for the “read to me” option. This limits children a little bit as it doesn’t allow children to easily follow along if they are still working on their reading skills.

Entertainment

The various illustrations and animations throughout the book are really great and help to make this an engaging and entertaining app. The additional in-app games like following the sequence in the ogre’s belly and locating the little cricket on each page adds a nice balance to the more educational activities. Children are also able to find a special surprise at the end of the app if they have completed all 4 challenges to do so which provides an additional goal for children in the app. Overall this is an app everyone in the family can enjoy.

Value

Priced at just under four dollars this app is a great deal. It offers so much more than just a story with 3D images, interactive illustrations, fun games, and narration options so parents are really getting lots of bang for their buck. Additionally with so much to do in this app, children are likely to come back to it many times over to discover new things they didn’t see before.

Child Friendliness

The Little Witch at School is great for children of all ages. With the “read to me” and “read to myself” options young children can enjoy the story easily as well as move through the app and play with the various illustrations. The difficulty levels also allows a wide range of options for older children that want a bit more of a challenge.

With no in-app purchases or social media links this app is completely safe for kids to use. The main page does offer a button to view other apps by the same developer, but it is protected so parents won’t have to worry about children getting into areas they shouldn’t be in.

Room on the Broom Games

App Info

Price: $3.99
AppStore User Rating: 3.5

Overview

Room on the Broom Games is a great Halloween themed app featured in our At-A-Glance: Halloween Apps For Kids post that is based on the book by author Julia Donaldson. With delightful images, gentle music, and a variety of fun activities, this is one app children are going to be able to enjoy over and over again.

Features include:

  • 8 Games
  • Gentle background music
  • Delightful music
  • Easy to use interface

Quality

There is no doubt that Room on the Broom has high quality images and animations that are perfect for children of all ages, but the thing I love the most about this app is how simple it is to play. The user interface is set up in a way that allows children to simply swipe through to find each new game. The audio included in this app consists of soothing music and fun sound effects that further enhance the visual appeal. All-in-all Room on the Broom Games is a very high quality app that will keep children engaged as they play.

Education

The various games included within the app have a good mix of education and entertainment. The educational games allow children to practice spelling as they steer the magical broomstick through the sky to find the correct letters to spell each word provided. There is also a fun game that allows players to move numbered stars around the sky so the witch can fly between them in sequence. These spelling and number games are great for younger children as they learn to count and spell simple words.

Entertainment

Room on the Broom Games offers many entertaining games that will keep children engaged for hours. Whether they are finding hidden items the witch has dropped in the forest, feeding a dragon french fries, or catching specific items that are flying by in the wind, players will be having fun as they complete each game.

An added bonus for this app are the various achievements they receive as they play. Once they have completed an activity, they are awarded a medal based on how well they did and they are given a goal for the next time they play to get an even better medal. This reward system will have children playing each activity more than once as they attempt to collect all of the achievements possible.
Needless to say this is a great app for entertainment.

Value

Priced at just under five dollars, this app might seem to be more expensive than some other apps out there, however the quality and the number of activities you get for that price is really good. I think parents will agree once they take a look at this app that is is worth the money.

Child Friendliness

With no in-app purchases, social media links or advertisements this app is great for children of all ages. The information section that parents might be interested in is protected and the icon is very small so children aren’t likely to end up in this area anyway. The simple set-up of the app is also great for children to use as it doesn’t require a lot of instruction to get started. Children can simply jump in to explore and play as they go.

Harry-ad-250x250

Available in the App Store

With Halloween quickly approaching you will want to add this cute story about a group of friends who need to enter an old, spooky house if they want their ball back to your collection. Harry and the Haunted house is a universal app that could have staying power on your devices being it is not just an app for Halloween. More fun than spooky the story should be fine even for young readers.

Not only is the number of options in the settings menu remarkable, but the options themselves are too. Patience mode, page story completion and page turn swipes options are not commonly found in other apps. Page turn swipes provide an alternative for those users that may not be able to perform the necessary action needed for swiping the screen to turn pages. Patience mode and page story completion allow for flexibility in the use of the app for different environments where you may or may not want children to touch the interactive objects until the end of the page. An option to highlight hotspots is available for teachers or parents who may want to preview the interactivity prior to using the app with kids.

Parent tips and teacher resources are available from the settings menu. Two classroom activities guides are available. Also available from the settings menu are multiple language choices, links to more apps and in-app purchases. The app does not contain ads or social media buttons.

Multiple navigation features make moving around the app easy; thumbnails of each page, page navigation arrows and a home button can be accessed at any time. Two reading options offer different ways to enjoy the story. Text is narrated and highlighted in both the Read to Me or Let Me Play choices. Missing are two important book app features, not all text of the story appears on the screen and having the ability to turn narration off.

Bottom line

Harry and the Haunted House is a cute story about a group of friends needing to enter a spooky house to retrieve their ball. More fun than spooky it should be fine even for young readers. Contains some great features, but lacks others.
– An interactive animated storybook by the creator of the award-winning Living Books series

– A tale of how things can seem a little scarier than they really are, especially to kids with active imaginations

– Winner of the Children’s Technology Review EDITOR’S CHOICE Award

Harry and the Haunted House lets young readers play inside the story and really interact with all the characters and words. It’s a slightly spooky and very imaginative, interactive reading experience with fully animated content on every page. In English and Spanish with French available as an upgrade.

Read and play along with Harry and his friends as they retrieve their baseball lost in the “haunted” house across the field. “W-What’s that noise?” “We froze in our steps…” Is the house really “haunted” or is it just their imaginations getting the better of them?

Developed by award winning children’s designer Mark Schlichting, creator of the best-selling Living Books series of interactive children’s books.

Regular Price: $4.99

screen1-monster

Available in the App Store

Frankenstein and Dracula don’t usually come to mind when you hear the word nutcracker. Singing Monster Nutcracker, an iPad app, will prove that nutcrackers are no longer just for the Christmas holiday.

With this reasonably priced app kids can interact with Frankenstein, Dracula, Wolfman, and a Zombie. Four sounds (or voices) can be used for each monster, or record your own. Monsters can answer yes/no questions and sing songs. Two prerecorded songs are available to choose from or make your own using the keyboard provided.

The app is simple to use and kids will not have any problems figuring out how to swap between the songs and sounds or record their own. There are not any in-app instructions, but then none are needed.

Poking monsters in the eyes and nose, and feeding them walnuts, candy corn, brains and dog treats are other ways kids can interact with the characters. Monsters get a little cranky if they are not fed.

On the main screen of the app there are a few external links to warn the kids against; clicking on the buttons will cause the user to exit the app. The links are for additional apps. Singing Monster Nutcracker does not contain in-app purchases, ads or social media.

The app was a hit at my house, but then anything that involves burping and farting is bound to be a hit with kids.

Bottom line

Singing Monster Nutcracker is a fun addition to your collection of Halloween apps. It is easy to use and reasonably priced. Kids will enjoy interacting with the monster nutcrackers.

Hazy Dell is a beautifully illustrated, quirky Halloween tale with a twist that leaves the ghouls running scared. The book includes Read To Me and Read To Myself features.

It’s Witching Hour in Hazy Dell has been a Halloween favorite in our house since it launched 2 years ago.

The story – which is beautifully told and illustrated – follows the Cyclops Witch, the Willowy Reaper, the Prune-skinned Goon and other creepy folks as they wander in to Hazy Dell to scare it’s citizens. Hazy Dell maybe a sleepy town, but these ghouls soon get payback courtesy of some ninja-dream-koalas and others.

While this book doesn’t include a lot of additional features or activities – what it does, it does very well. We highly recommend adding this to your Halloween app list.

Features include:

  • Read To Me
  • Read To Myself
  • Send a Postcard

We give this app top marks for quality and design. 5 out of 5!

The app has fabulously quirky illustrations and professional audio narration, with nice animated touches and audio throughout. We rated this iPad book app 4 for education. It is a wonderful book which will, hopefully, instill a love of reading in young kids.

To increase it’s educational value, word highlighting should be an option at a minimum. In the Read To Me version, the lines of the story float in, but while it is a nice effect, we think highlighting individual words more effective.

The story itself is fun and entertaining, but we would like to have seen some interactive elements too.

The “Send a Hazy Dell” e-card simply sends a Hazy Dell Happy Halloween card via email.

The app is easy to use, but once in the story there is no way to easily navigate back home, or to other pages within the story.

The settings icon, which is included on the home screen and throughout the story, includes Narration On/Off and Sound Effects On/Off.

Settings screen includes Twitter, Facebook and Email links which we don’t like to see to easily accessible to children.

While this app doesn’t include much in the way of extras, at $1.99 for a fun iPad / HD book app, we consider this good value.Available on the App Store

halloween-books

Our second Halloween app list is all about books. We have some old favorites from last year, like Vlad’s Vampire Bats, and newcomers, Frankie for Kids. Included are some classics from Oceanhouse Media, like What Was I Scared Of? by Dr. Seuss and a Halloween themed book from the Berenstain Bears.

Once again, since it’s Halloween, these apps may not be appropriate for all ages. Please check the content rating and always check the app our before handing the iPad or iPhone over to children.

I will continue to add more books as I search the cobwebby old stacks of the App Store.

halloweenapps-free

We just couldn’t resist starting the Halloween season off with a selection of free, yes – free, halloween apps for kids. Not only are these apps free, they have also received an average rating of 4 stars by users in the app store. That’s a lot of good, free halloween apps! scary halloween

Available in the App Store

The Scariest Halloween Story Ever is a silly halloween tale that’s perfect for children just getting into the scary side of halloween, but not quite ready to be completely scared. The app follows a little boy as the character of the The Candy Corn Man, protector of scaredy cats and chickens.

The story seems to be straight out of the imagination of a 9 year old trying to scare a younger brother or sister. Telling us we’re too scared and we shouldn’t keep reading, while luring us further into the story. The Candy Corn Man’s costume is made from bits and pieces laying around the house: a cardboard box for a mask, a sheet for a cape and oven mitts for gloves. All this builds a strong connection between the character and the reader.

Throughout the story, there are interactive elements, but not on every page, which I felt lacked consistency. The interactive features that are included are fun and creative – bugs that gather around your finger on the screen, meatballs splatting (for eyeballs), and a chalkboard to draw on.

While the app is very good, it didn’t quite seem to reach it’s potential. I would like to have seen interactive elements on more, if not all, pages. I also found the app wasn’t as responsive as it could have been, drawing with the chalk was laggy, for example. The app also crashed several times on the older iPad 1.

Bottom line

The Scariest Halloween Story Ever is a fun app that will get kids into the spirit of Halloween in a silly, semi-scary way. The app does need more interactive elements, but I do recommend it as a Halloween treat for the kids. Follow Candy Corn Man on an interactive reading adventure full of Halloween surprises and unexpected turns. The Scariest Halloween Story Ever! is an interactive storybook with an engaging narrative and fun mini-games that’s perfect for getting in the Halloween ‘spirit’! Regular Price: $2.99

Dress Up For Girls: Holiday is a universal app that will provide your child with hours of entertainment. This app is a free download, with one in-app purchase to unlock all of the themes. The free version includes the New Year’s theme, which in itself could keep your child busy for quite a while.

Themes available with the in-app purchase are Easter, Halloween, St. Patrick’s Day and Christmas. In each theme, your child can customize the virtual girl by changing the hairstyles, clothes (tops, bottoms, and dresses), accessories (shoes, purses, necklaces, bracelets, hats, headbands, sunglasses, masks and earrings) and skin tone.

Dress Up For Girls: Holiday is best described as a virtual Barbie; all of her clothing and accessories included. The best part is that you can easily take this anywhere; without the fear of losing any accessories or having to pick them up when your child is done playing!

Warning to parents, this app may contain content that is inappropriate for younger users; some of the outfits are a bit suggestive. This is one area I would like to see the developer change; either change the age range or the clothing.

Other suggestions would be to have the option of background music and interactive objects.

Bottom-line: Dress Up for Girls: Holiday is a good app for the fashion diva at your house.

Doodle Grub HD - PIXOWL INC.

[tabtext]Our Review[/tabtext] [tabtext]Description[/tabtext] Doodle Grub is a fun little app based on the classic snake game. The backgrounds are fun, the characters are charming, and it’s simple to play. Just tilt the iPhone or iPad to move the snake: eating green and gold apples while avoiding your enemies and poisonous apples. When you see a ladybug – eat it – you will then be able to attack your enemies.

It’s a little too easy to die in this game – we need more ladybugs! – which might frustrate younger players if they die too quickly, too often. The game is free and ad-supported with the option to upgrade to the non-ad supported version for $0.99 or earn your way to a free upgrade by getting 10,000 points. It’s not easy to earn the free upgrade, but it is possible. Doodle Grub HD is also available for $2.99

Bottom-line: it’s a fun, free game for kids, but might frustrate younger players, but worth the upgrade if you like to play. Tilt your device to navigate the grub eating apples as you go. Earn points and grow in length. But be careful! Avoid collisions with nasty enemies moving around that will take the segments they touch. Once they hit the grub’s head – the game is over! Enjoy a great variety of amazing themes – including Halloween, Christmas, St. Valentine, Jurassic, Underwater – with tons of fearsome enemies and unexpected events!

FEATURES:

• 5 FREE and 6 unlockable themes with unique enemies • Charming graphics optimized for Retina Display • Intuitive and responsive tilt controls • Support for Open Feint and Game Center leaderboards and achievements • Online and Bluetooth multiplayer modes • Twitter and Facebook support Play with your friends, share your high scores, discover secret achievements and compete for the top spot on the leaderboards! Doodle Grub is a fun and addicting treat for the whole family!

StarTeeth iPhone / iPad app help kids to brush teeth

App Info

Price: Free
AppStore User Rating: 4.5
Download on the App Store

This is a simple, but fantastic app. Kids – and adults too – will enjoy this app that walks you through your 2 minute teeth brushing. There are several characters to chose from including seasonal ones such as Halloween and Christmas. Follow these characters as they brush their teeth back and front, up and down, with a pleasant ditty playing in the background. This is not a universal app, but still looks great on my iPad.

In our household, the dog is the favorite and it really has made this chore fun for the kids. Instead of fighting to get the kids to brush their teeth, they actually rush to the bathroom – now that’s one heck of an app.

Let's Bead Friends iPhone / iPad app

Let's Bead Friends iPhone / iPad appLet’s Bead Friends – i-Itch Inc.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5
Buy it? Yes
iPhone / iPod app: $0.99
iPad app: n/a
Universal app: n/a

Let's Bead Friends - i-Itch Inc.

The Let’s Bead Friends app is simply adorable and for 0.99, a great 5 star app. The idea is simple, you made a virtual bead bracelet and add it to your jewelry box. Although, this is targeted to girls, my boys have enjoyed making their own bracelet, especially using the Halloween beads.

If the app stays exactly as is, it is a great little app, but there is a lot of potential here and I would love to see how it develops.

Although, the app is designed for the iPhone / iPod it looks and works fine on the iPad despite not being a universal app.

Best Halloween Apps for Kids

Halloween comes but once a year, but it really captures the creativity of kids. Fueled with candy, Halloween night usually ends about 3 hours before that sugar high is going to wear off. So what can you do inside until the kids are ready to finally sleep – that’s right, there’s an app for that. Here are some of the best Halloween ipad / iphone / ipod apps for kids.

1. Hazy Dell – Halloween App for Kids

Hazy Dell HD – Tangorang Labs LLC

Hazy Dell iPhone / iPod – Tangorang Labs LLC

The first app is Hazy Dell an awesome Halloween ebook for kids. I absolutely love the way the app is illustrated and overall the app has a nice balance of scariness and charm. However, the scariest thing about the app is that it isn’t a universal app – don’t make me pay twice for an app that should as a universal app. Designed by Tangorang Labs brothers Kyle and Derek Sullivan, I’d love to see what else this duo comes up with.

2. Carve It! Halloween App for Kids

Carve It! Pumpkin Carving – ABCya.com

This is a simple app that appeals to a wide range of ages – I actually enjoyed it myself. Apart from the pumpkin carving part of the app there is the pumpkin bungee game which is pretty fun. It’s part pin ball and a teeny part Angry Birds. What I really love is that it’s a universal app, meaning it looks as good on my ipad as on my iphone.

3. Doodle Jump Halloween Edition

Doodle Jump – Lima Sky

This is a downright great little game. Not designed especially for kids, it does keep all the family entertained. The newest theme is halloween which joins a collection of 5 or so other backgrounds. If you want a Halloween app for kids, that you won’t grow out of and lasts beyond Halloween – try it!

4. Dress Jack-o-ween Halloween App for Kids

Dress Jack-o-Ween for iPhone – Emantras Inc
Dress Jack-o-Ween for iPad – Emantras Inc

This is a great app for halloween and allows you to dress up your pumpkin. The best thing about this halloween app is that you can record your own halloween greeting – or choose from several prerecorded messages. I tested it on the iPad version and had problems with it crashing, but as soon as I restarted the app it worked beautifully.
