Features include:

  • Text highlighting
  • In-story activities
  • Voice Record
  • Read to me/Read to myself

Quality

Time For Bed Little Ted is a cute storybook app that is sure to help little ones begin to wind down for the night. In addition to the easy to use interface and brightly colored images and illustrations, the developers have included soothing music and narration to help create a calming feel for the app overall. The activities included within the story are simple and help readers move through a bedtime routine which may be especially helpful for parents who have bedtime struggles with their little one. Overall, the app is very well done.

Education

For many children getting into a bedtime routine can be difficult, but this storybook app walks children through the various tasks that need to be done before bed. As readers help Little Ted clean up his toys, put on his pajamas, wash his face, and brush his teeth, they too are learning the necessary steps they must complete before bed. The developers have also included text highlighting and a variety of narration options for children to follow along and practice their reading skills which is great.

Entertainment

In addition to the already entertaining story, readers will be happy to find short, interactive activities throughout the story. By helping Little Ted put his toys away, put his pajamas on, wash his face, brush his teeth, and read his own bedtime story, children are not only able to stay engaged in the story, but they are also learning their own bedtime routine. The developers have also included a coloring activity for little ones to enjoy in addition to the story.

Value

Priced at just under three dollars, this app is priced well for what you get. When you consider the narration options, voice record, in-story activities, and the coloring pages, this app is a steal. Both parents and children can agree that this is a great bedtime app that won’t break the bank.

Child Friendliness

In addition to having an excellent, soothing story with fun activities for children to enjoy, Time For Bed Little Ted is incredibly easy to use and safe too. With simple tap and drag functioning throughout and arrows at the bottom of each page to follow along with this is a great app for children of all ages. The developers have also done a great job making this app free of ads and other distractions.

Overview

Drew Meets Boo is another installment in the story of Drew and his drum. In this story, Drew meets a friend he can truly admire. The book has a healthy, positive message for young children as they learn to get along with one another.

Features include:

  • Highly interactive pages
  • Three languages (English, Chinese, Spanish) available
  • Colorful, engaging illustrations
  • Optional narration
  • Rhyming text

Quality

Drew Meets Boo is an excellent quality ebook designed for young children. It is easy to navigate and highly interactive. The pages that have text are not read automatically, but can easily be activated by touching the words. The language can be changed between English, Spanish and Chinese. It would be nice if there was a way to “tone down” the background music, though. As it stands, the choices are only a toggle on or off. The music is very nice, but frequently overbalances the sound effects and the narration.

Education

Drew Meets Boo is the second book in a series about a young boy who enjoys his drum so much that he takes it everywhere. He sometimes struggles with teasing and bullying because of this. In this story, he meets Boo, a girl with such bright red hair that people tease her about it. She handles the teasing very well, and Drew is impressed. She sets quite a good example for not letting bullies upset her. She and Drew form a lasting friendship as they accept each other for who they are. The app also does not include any games or puzzles like many in this category, which could extend the educational value.

The storyline in this book is a little thin. It relies fairly heavily on knowing Drew’s history with his drum for meaning, and readers who did not read the first book may be just a little bit lost. The book also does not suggest possible strategies to handle the bullies and the teasing, as the first book did. Drew learns that Boo doesn’t let teasing or meanness get to her, and she even invites the bullies to her birthday party, where they all have a great time. If only things were that easy in real life!

Entertainment

Drew Meets Boo is very entertaining. The book is one of the most interactive e-books that I’ve seen, with nearly every object on each page activating a hidden animation or sound effect. Some touches trigger random effects that change each time you activate them. It can get quite frantic if readers touch rapidly and get many effects going all at once!

Though there is a lot of busy-ness, the interactions don’t support the story very well. In fact, the story manages to go from beach scenes to circus scenes to snow scenes to outdoor birthday party scenes in thirteen short pages. Developers may want to consider a few less interactions that are more related to the story, as the present array can get quite distracting.

Value

Drew Meets Boo is $1.99 in the App Store, which is a great value. The story is uplifting, the interactions are fun, and young children will be quite entertained. They are likely to use this ebook again and again, which always improves the value!

Child Friendliness

This app is very child-friendly. It does include an advertisement for another app by the same developer on the navigation page, but it is not a live link.

Overview

Tints: Dyslexia Friendly Reading offers a selection of books (as in-app purchases) for readers ages eight to younger teen. The app provides a selection of colored backgrounds and a “reading ruler” designed to make reading easier for some individuals with dyslexia.

Features include:

  • Seven books available at a range of reading levels
  • Free sample chapter available
  • Five colored backgrounds
  • Adjustable reading ruler to guide eye movements
  • Dyslexia-friendly font

Quality

This app performs exactly as expected. Pages of the ebooks turn readily and the background color is easy to change. The “Reading Ruler” (a tinted guide to help with tracking across lines on the page) is readily available at the bottom of the screen, but is not intrusive. Developers included an extensive information section with videos and text explaining how the app can help individuals with dyslexia and how to use its features, as well as a “Frequently Asked Questions” section explaining how and why this app differs from other apps designed to support struggling readers.

Education

Tints does an outstanding job of helping teachers, parents, and students discover if changes to the background color of text improves comfort and efficiency of reading. For some individuals with dyslexia, modifying the level of contrast between print and background can improve perception of words. This has been accomplished manually through the use of colored plastic overlays, which can be expensive and difficult to find. This app provides five different backgrounds that can be toggled on a master screen, providing easy access and a way to discover if this strategy will help each individual.

The app has an optional library available for purchase, with one chapter of one book available for free as a sample. There are currently seven books in the library, all award-winning juvenile fiction from Great Britain, so none of the titles are likely to be familiar to American readers. Each book costs between $7.99 and $8.99. One major drawback is that the app’s documentation indicates that stories are suitable for children from ages 8 to teen, but there is no indication of the exact reading level for any of the books. This information would be crucial for teachers working with struggling readers, since literature that is too difficult to read would be very frustrating for them. Research online reveals that the books are also available from major booksellers, but it would take effort to determine the reading level without purchasing them.

The app also includes two more interesting features. The font has been specifically designed to make reading easier for dyslexic readers, in that it eliminates letters that are identical when reversed or inverted. It also uses spacing, line length, and other visual features to best advantage. At the bottom of the screen is a feature called the “Reading Ruler.” This section of slightly more vividly-tinted screen is adjustable in that it can be raised and lowered across the text. The horizontal edges can help readers with tracking, and the tinted area can serve to highlight the text as it is being read.

Another use for this app is to discover if overlays would help a dyslexic student. The sample chapter offers an opportunity to experiment with the five colors of background, and the colors included are fairly standard and match with overlays available from educational supply companies. In addition, there is an extensive information section that uses a different color background on each page. More able readers can experiment with this section to discover if tinted pages or changes to contrast levels between background and text improve their reading.

Entertainment

This app is not intended to be entertaining.

Value

While this free app is very useful to help teachers, parents or mentors determine if colored backgrounds make reading easier or more comfortable for struggling students, it does not have too many resources by itself. Purchase of books (available as in-app purchases) could be on the expensive side, as each costs between $7.99 and $8.99. While there is no indication of the size of the books within the app, an internet search of major booksellers revealed that the sample book (Hostage by Malorie Blackman) is 72 pages in length in print. Developers should consider increasing the number of available titles as well as adding some titles at lower costs.

Child Friendliness

This app is intended for use by adults with children, or by adults who are struggling with reading. However, parents should be aware that the in-app purchases for books in the library are not protected by a parent gate. Tapping the purchase price brings up the log-in screen for the App Store directly.

Overview

Have you ever looked a the world and imagined what it would be like if it were not so boring? Max has. His head is full of pictures of a more exciting world, but those ideas stayed in his head until he found the Wunderglasses. The Wunderglasses allow Max experience the world around in a much more interesting and colorful way. In this animated story, kids can put on the Wunderglasses and explore along with Max. They’ll discover dancing statues, sunbathing fish, and a whole host of other oddities along the way.

Features include:

  • Read to Me option
  • Read to Myself option
  • Animated illustrations
  • Two languages: English and German
  • Highly creative story

Quality

On the main screen, kids are given the option to start the story or enter the city. They can also select to interact with the app in English or German. When kids start the story, they’re introduced to Max. The story is narrated by a soft, but entertaining narrator. However, kids can opt to turn off the narration. Arrows allow kids to navigate from page to page. When the Wunderglasses are introduced, a finger shows kids how to pull them down from the top of the screen. Whenver the Wunderglasses appear, kids can pull them down to see the scene change like magic.

Education

This app focuses on two areas of education: reading and creative thinking. The text appears clearly on each page and is organized well, but could be improved with a bit of text highlighting. Education-wise, it is the content of the story that really shines. Max’s use of the Wunderglasses encourages kids to see the world through different eyes. They’re shown that it’s okay to imagine a different world and reminded always take a second glance at what’s going on around them because things are not always as they appear to be. For kids, learning can sometimes be rigid and focused, but this app encourages them to loosen up a bit and use their imaginations.

Entertainment

At first, the story may seem a tad bit boring to kids. It takes some time for Max to be introduced to the Wunderglasses. It also gets a bit boring at the end when the Wunderglasses are taken away. In between, however, the story is a lot of fun for kids. They’ll enjoy pulling on the Wunderglasses and seeing all of the crazy things that only Max can see. These include aliens playing saxophones, monsters hiding in the clothes basket, and giant heads popping out of the hoods of cars.

Value

The Wunderglasses is priced comparably to other animated ebooks of a similar quality. It offers a lengthy text and plenty of interactive animations for kids to enjoy. The creativity and imagination present in the story make it a great choice for kids.

Child Friendliness

The app is free from social media, more apps, and other content designed to distract kids from the stories. The story told in the app is also very child-friendly. A few illustrations, namely the topless sunbathers laying on towels on the beach, may be a bit controversial, but they are small and kids may overlook them.

Overview

Littlest Pet Shop: Pet Style is an interactive storybook app that takes readers into the world of stylish pets of all shapes and sizes. As Blythe shares her experiences from her first days in Downtown City, readers learn about all the fun loving characters and fashionable animals that make up the Littlest Pet Shop. This app has something for everyone as it is a mix of storytelling, interactive games, and animation that kids are going to love.

Features include:

  • Sketchbook puzzle
  • Room decoration activity
  • Read to me/Read to myself options

Quality

The developers have done an outstanding job of making this app visually appealing and interactive. The interactive images and animation used throughout the story add a ton of interest to keep children engaged as they read or follow along with the story. With animation that is similar to what you might see while watching the television show the developers have created an interesting mix of storytelling and interactive activities that is sure to keep kids of all ages engaged. The audio and sound effects are also great.

While the majority of the app is very well done, there seems to be a bit of a glitch with the dress up and room decorating activities. The touch response needs a bit of polishing as some of the accessories etc. don’t respond or have a delayed response during play time. Aside from those bits, the rest of the app is quite easy to use and intuitive for even young children to play.

Education

Not rated for education.

Entertainment

Littlest Pet Shop: Pet Style offers lots of great activities for children to enjoy in addition to the story. Within the story there is a search and find game that allows readers to find fun accessories they can use to decorate their fashionable pet’s pictures at the end of the app. There is also a sketchbook puzzle and room decorating activity that is incorporated into the story that children will love.

One of my favorites is the dress up activity that allows kids to dress up various animals using a wide variety of clothes and accessories so they can walk the run way in style! For children who don’t know much about the Littlest Pet Shop, there are also a variety of journal pages scattered throughout the story that give readers a bit more information about each character from the standpoint of Blythe, the main character. With so much to enjoy, this is one app children are going to come back to over and over again.

Value

Priced at just under three dollars this app is a great value. It offers not only an interactive story that children will love, but also lots of fun activities to keep children engaged and coming back for more. The overall quality is also quite good with great graphics and animation for children to enjoy.

Child Friendliness

With narration options and an intuitive user interface, this app is great for children of all ages. The developers have also done a nice job of keeping the parents only sections of the app appropriately protected so children don’t get into areas they shouldn’t be while using the app. Aside from adding text highlighting and polishing the touch response in the dress up and room decorating activities, this app is very well done.

Overview

Something terrible has happened to Peepo and the elves in Christmasland. Instead of preparing for Halloween, the witch has to head to Christmasland to save Christmas. This delightful animated story combines fun characters, music, and games to create a magical holiday learning experience for kids.

Features include:

  • Interactive story
  • Educational games
  • Fun characters
  • Three languages: English, French, German
  • Feature 4

Quality

Kids will find that the app is well-organized and easy to navigate. Once in the story, they’ll find a page navigation bar on the side, as well as arrows to allow them to turn the individual pages. As kids are reading through and interacting with the story, dots appear to tell them where to tap, making it easy to figure out what is going on. The story itself features clear narration and different voices for each character. Those voices, along with the sound effects and animations, help make the story enjoyable.

Education

While the story does not feature text highlighting, it does offer other elements to help kids understand the text. Each character’s dialogue is displayed in a different color. Dialogue is also set off from the regular text with a small icon. Throughout the app, kids also get to participate in different learning activities. For example, in one of the first scenes, they must use their number recognition skills to build a snowman. The story also includes an alphabet game and multiple activities designed to help kids use their fine and gross motor skills.

Entertainment

The premise of the story – a witch who has to leave her Halloween preparations to save Christmas – is an amusing one. While kids will enjoy all of the games and other interactive elements of the story, they’ll also find that the story itself is very entertaining. The entertainment factor is increased by the fun character voices and sound effects within the app. As kids read through the story and complete activities, they also get the chance to unlock a few surprises.

Value

Kids can download the app and read the first part of the story for free, but access to the entire story must be purchased within the app. The price of the entire story is comparable to other animated ebooks and includes a set of educational games and other fun surprises for kids. If kids are interested in the first part of the story, it’s worth a download to keep reading on.

Overview

A Forest of Families is a hand-drawn storybook app that takes readers on a journey through a forest full of various animals and fun sounds for children to enjoy. This rhyming tale offers simple, hand-drawn illustrations that add a bit of character to this sweet app making it quite unique and beautiful.

Features include:

  • Rhyming story
  • Hand-drawn illustrations
  • Read to me/Read to myself options

Quality

The first thing you notice about this storybook app is the simple hand-drawn technique used for the illustrations throughout the story that adds a bit of character to the story. The developers have done a nice job creating a simple to use interface as readers only need to swipe through the pages as they read on their own or with the narrator. While the images add a nice touch to the story, the overall quality of the app could us a bit of polishing with re-positioning the text (currently the text overshadows some of the illustrations) and adding text highlighting to help a bit with the readability of the text.

Education

It’s always nice to find a story book app that provides a bit of educational material for children to learn and A Forest of Families does just that. Not only will readers learn what kinds of animals live in the forest, but they also get to learn a few fun facts about the animals as well. For instance, the life cycle of a frog and the fact that a baby deer is called a fawn and the mother is called a doe are all facts that are included within the story. This is a great way for children to learn while they practice their reading skills.

The developers have included narration options within the app that allows early readers to practice their reading skills, however text-highlighting is not included. Adding this feature would allow early readers to follow along and learn new vocabulary words and strengthen their reading skills as they enjoy the story.

Entertainment

As mentioned before, this storybook app includes lots of great sound effects that accompany the story. Children are going to love reading and re-reading the story to see which animals live in the forest. In addition to the story, there is also a coloring activity that allows readers to draw and color their own pictures which is a fun added activity. Unfortunately there seems to be an issue saving and printing the pictures once they are drawn as it kicks the user out of the app when using those options.

Value

Priced at just under three dollars this app is in line with most of the other storybook apps available. With the read to me and read to myself narration options, the educational story, and the additional coloring activity included this app is a good value overall.

Child Friendliness

The developers have done an excellent job making sure this app is easy to use for children as it includes narration options and simple swipe technology to move throughout the story. It also includes protected parent-only gateways that are great for younger users to ensure this app is completely safe to use for children of all ages.

Overview

Drew’s Dancing Drum tells the story of a young boy learning to be himself in spite of criticism from others. The book promotes a number of positive values, such as seeking guidance from parents, handling bullies, and more.

Features include:

  • Highly interactive pages
  • Three languages (English, Chinese, Spanish) available
  • Colorful, engaging illustrations
  • Optional narration
  • Rhyming text

Quality

Drew’s Dancing Drum is a good quality e-book with a positive message that will appeal to many young children. The pages are loaded with interactions; nearly every picture on each page does something when tapped.  Some interactions are very appropriate, such as animating a hug between father and son at a touching moment.  Each page also has a hidden gingerbread cookie for children to find.  Some of the interactions seem quite gratuitous, though, such as trees that grow and shrink or Christmas stockings that bounce.  While they may be fun to find, they add little to the story.

There are some concerns with the mechanics of the book.  Some children may find it difficult to turn the pages, since the page forward arrow is hidden. Users must first use a different arrow to open up the navigation on each page, then tap the arrow to move forward or backward in the book.  It would be nice to have an option to tone down the background music, especially for children who have difficulty concentrating.  The app plays an assortment of Christmas carols, but all at a fairly frantic pace and at a higher volume level than is necessary.  Also, there are a few pages where some text is hidden until the user taps the text to have it read aloud.  There is no indication that there is more to know on the page, so children who are trying to read on their own may miss a few key points in the story.

Education

Drew’s Dancing Drum has a theme of learning to love yourself with subthemes related to managing outside criticism or bullying and listening to parents.  It sends some very positive messages, especially to young children.  It is always nice to find ebooks that build up character!

Drew, a young boy full of the joy of life, has a drum he loves and takes everywhere. In the middle of his happiness, another child makes fun of his drum and sucks much of the joy out of his world. His father helps him see that others’ words don’t need to affect how we feel about ourselves, and Drew resumes his happy outlook on life.

While the book does have a very positive message, it could be improved by making the message more clear. Young children, particularly those who are struggling with bullying, sometimes have difficulty with subtlety. The bullying depicted in the story is extremely gentle, and only comes from one person.  The solution was simply Dad reminding Drew that the other boy was wrong to make fun of the drum.  It might be important for young children to hear a stronger message that they should be themselves and not allow outsiders to influence their self-worth.

Entertainment

This app is very interactive. Each page has numerous animations and sound effects, almost to the point of overwhelm.  Lights can be turned on and off, fires in the fireplace change color, trees grow and shrink, and animals jump and gyrate.  It might be better for developers to focus on five or six interactions that better support the story and theme than to have so many (some pages have dozens) that seem a bit out of place.

Many ebooks also have short games to reinforce the main ideas of the story, and this one would benefit from a greater selection of activities.  As it stands, each page has a hidden gingerbread cookie to find, but no other games that I could see.

Value

Drew’s Dancing Drum is a free app, so it’s a great value even if your child only reads through it a few times.  It’s got a very positive message and might help a child who is struggling with negativity from others consider asking a parent or teacher for help. That alone is important, and when you throw in the fun of tracking down the interactions on each page, it’s well worth your investment of time to download.  I wouldn’t use it as bedtime fare, though!  The background music is very fast-paced and is quite likely to wind children up instead of helping them relax.

Child Friendliness

This app is very child-friendly, but might be a bit difficult to use due to the placement of the navigation tools.  There is an advertisement for another app from this developer in the page selection area, but it is not a live link.

Overview

LuvYa Reader Recorder is a unique take on the traditional story time that both parents and children will love. This recorder app allows parents, grandparents or anyone to record biblical stories, daily devotions, and prayers that can be shared with children, grand-children and others anywhere using the LuvYa Reader Listener app. This app provides a great way for families to stay connected no matter where they are in the world.

Features include:

  • Easy to use
  • 4 Pre-loaded stories
  • Great images/illustrations

Quality

I love the concept behind the LuvYa Reader Recorder app as it offers a great way to use technology for families to stay connected. The set up is easy to use and parents or grandparents can easily download the app, set up their profile and begin recording one of four pre-loaded stories and devotionals that can be sent to their children or grandchildren anywhere. The images and illustrations included are also very engaging and the receiver (using the LuvYa Reader Listener app) can easily access the recording and follow along with the story or devotional with ease. The quality of the recording is also very good which is important for this kind of app.

Education

While this app is aimed at connecting families and sharing stories from The Bible, it isn’t what you think of when you think of traditional educational apps. This app does offer children a new way to learn biblical stories and read along using the listener app. Unlike other digital storybooks, this app does not include any text highlighting which is too bad and could enhance the educational component to allow children to learn new words and practice their reading skills as they follow along.

Entertainment

Imagine being several miles from grandma or grandpa and still being able to hear their voice with a bedtime story before bed. LuvYa Reader Recorder makes that possible which is great for children of all ages. The app comes pre-loaded with four stories and devotionals to start with and an entire store of other options to choose from all of which children will love. While this isn’t one of the apps you would ‘play’ it does offer children the chance to connect with loved ones near and far in a new way.

Value

Both the LuvYa Reader Recorder and Listener apps are free to download and the recorder app comes pre-loaded with four stories that can be recorded and shared right off the bat. There are additional stories, prayers, and devotionals that can be purchased ranging in price from just under two dollars to just under five. While individually the prices don’t seem to be too much, it would be nice to have an option to purchase a bundle at a reduced rate for parents and grandparents. It is also important to note that the stories can only be shared up to three times before another purchase needs to be made. I think parents will agree this app is a great value as it offers a few stories to try for free before committing to purchasing more.

Child Friendliness

The LuvYa Reader Recorder is more likely going to be used by parents or grandparents since they are stories that are recorded to be sent to children. And since this app does include the option to purchase additional stories to be recorded it is important to have those areas protected in case children gain access to the app itself. The reader version of the app does not include any in app purchases or areas of concern and is likely where the children will be accessing stories, however parents will want to be aware that the in-app purchases aren’t protected in the recorder version of the app

Quality

Magic Poof is a storybook app full of fun interactive images and great sound effects that help to bring the story to life and keep kids engaged as they read. The developers have also done a nice job of making this app easy to use for children of all ages with a brief instruction page that highlights all of the features throughout the app including, text highlighting, interactive images, and buttons to help readers move through the story with ease. Children are going to love the interactive surprises hidden throughout the story as they enjoy this creative story. Overall, this app is very well done.

Education

It’s always nice to find storybook apps with both the narration options and text highlighting for children to follow along with. It helps pre-readers get exposed to new words and begin to learn to read while early readers can practice their skills and add to their vocabulary as they follow along. Parents will also be happy to see that along with text highlighting, children can tap each word to hear it aloud which allows readers to add even more words to their growing vocabulary.

Entertainment

There is no doubt children are going to love this app. The story takes readers on a magical adventure into their imaginations as they see the Magic Poof come to life right on Ange-Marie’s head. This imaginative story is sure to inspire little ones to tap into their own creativity and explore their imaginations as they read. The developers have also included an additional activity that allows players to shape their own Poof by using the camera function on their device which also helps to keep kids engaged.

  • Animations and sound effects on every page
  • Highlighted words as they are read
  • Read aloud or read-to-me options
  • Extra activities to build comprehension and other skills
  • Professional narration with differentiated character voices

Quality

Sam Plays Saxophone is a high-quality e-book app. The default setting is narrated with sound effects, but users have the option of turning these off if desired. Each page has animations that are marked by a blue dot or a set of orange arrows. The key is explained before the story starts, but I think many children would rather explore the page to find hidden animations.  In addition, I think that many children might skip over the oral directions completely in their rush to get to the story itself.  The home screen includes two links for parents, privacy and information, but these are somewhat challenging to access, even following the printed directions. The device did not seem to be responding to my “swipe right” that indicated access.

Education

This app is educational for young children. Sam the Squirrel takes a trip “down under” to find just the right musical friends, and children can infer that he makes a long ocean voyage from California, stops at New Zealand, and finally Australia. Many of the characters, like the kiwi, dingo and kangaroo, provide adults with a great opportunity to talk about these animals that are not native to the United States. The illustrations are outstanding, and also will provide teachable moments as they show famous rock formations in Australia, cave drawings and more. It’s a great chance to help young children learn a bit more about a faraway land.

The story is told in rhyming verse, so it presents a chance to work with rhyming words and other phonemic awareness skills. Each line is highlighted as it is read. This would likely be more effective if the words were individually highlighted instead of the entire line.

Sam Plays Saxophone includes several activities after the story has been read. These can also be accessed from the home page if desired. The first is likely a bit too challenging for preschoolers and kindergarteners. Users are presented with a map showing the United States, New Zealand, and Australia and challenged to place the characters along a progress line in the order in which Sam encountered them.  Three overlap and would likely be quite confusing for young learners. There are two comprehension questions on this page, as well. Both can be answered orally, then users can hear the correct responses. They also are a bit difficult for the young users in the target audience. One asks users to recite the instruments played by Sam’s new friends, and the other asks for names of the two rock formations in Australia.  The names of the formations were not mentioned in the story; they were simply indicated by signs in the illustrations.

The other two activities are great. One is an outline of a saxophone that children can assemble like a jigsaw puzzle. Complete the puzzle, and you will hear a brief history of the instrument. This is pitched at a fairly high language level, and is likely to mostly go over young children’s heads. The final activity is a music score of the melody played by Sam throughout the story. Touch each note to hear it individually, or press the “play” button to hear the entire piece.

Entertainment

Sam Plays Saxophone is a fun e-book that will entertain young children. It’s always intriguing to explore the animations on the pages of an e-book and the story itself is engaging and interesting. Though some of the extra activities are pitched at too high of a level for the audience likely to enjoy the story, most have some play value even if they are too difficult, and children will feel successful even if they do not understand all of the information.

Value

This e-book is priced at $3.99. The story is fun and the activities are enjoyable, but neither are likely to capture most children’s attention for the kind of repetitive play that one would expect with an ebook.

Child Friendliness

This app is very child friendly.

Overview

Learning Emotions with the Rainbow Feelings Bear is a storybook app that teaches children a wide variety of feelings in an easy to follow app. This app is designed to teach children to express their emotions by following the corresponding colors and facial expressions. Great for young children who may find it difficult to express how they feel.

Features include:

  • 10 Feelings included
  • Narration options (Read to me, Read to myself)
  • How are you feeling activity

Quality

Children are sure to find the images and bright colors included in this app quite appealing. The developers have also done a nice job creating an app that has an easy to use for children of all ages. By simply tapping and touching the bears throughout the story and utilizing the arrows to move from page-to-page, children can easily enjoy this story on their own. The added narration option also helps make this app great for early readers.

Education

Learning Emotions with the Rainbow Feelings Bear is an app that teaches children about a variety of emotions including ‘happy’, ‘surprised’, ‘angry’, and ‘jealous’. As children grow, it can be difficult for them to communicate their feelings and emotions and really understand what they are feeling. This app not only teaches children other emotions outside of being happy, sad, or angry, but also helps them to share what they are feeling with parents and other adults in their lives using the ‘How are you feeling?’ activity.

With this being a storybook app it seems the developers have missed an opportunity to add a bit of reading practice with text highlighting in addition to the narration that is included. Adding this would certainly increase the overall educational value of the app and provide another area for children to practice and learn.

Entertainment

Not rated for entertainment.

Value

Priced at just under three dollars this app is a bit more than some parents may want to pay. While there are ten emotions included and narration options, the app does not offer any additional entertainment activities in addition to the story. There also are none of the learning tools found in many children’s ebooks, such as highlighting words as they are read aloud or embedding hidden animations in the illustrations to add interest.  Adding a few more activities and bringing down the price a bit would certainly create a more valuable app overall.

Child Friendliness

The developers have done a great job keeping this app easy and safe for young children to use. With narration options and arrows to indicate how to turn the page, readers will have no problem moving through the app on their own.

Overview

I Got This: An Interactive Story walks users through a first-person account of a teen who developed type 2 diabetes in an interactive e-book format.  The story is told graphic-novel style, with lots of opportunities for interaction. It provides a first-hand look at the illness, its causes and its management.

Features include:

  • Interactive ebook pages
  • Accessible and easy to understand
  • Engaging first-person account
  • Includes practical, accurate information
  • Realistic responses and interpersonal situations

Quality

I Got This is a high-quality app that is very well-designed for its purpose. Each page includes appropriate and engaging interactions that are fun but not essential to the main story. The app will “remember” your place unless it is turned completely off in the device, causing it to start over. The most obvious feature common to ebooks but missing from this app is the ability to go backwards or page forwards in the book.  While developers likely do not want people doing this on the first time through, there are likely to be times when learners would like to find specific parts to check details or reference them, so this feature should be available.

Education

I Got This is a graphic-novel style ebook that students of all ages will find engaging.  It is designed around a main character in early high school, but the information is accessible and important for students in middle school or college, as well.  Each page opens up several dialog boxes with short snippets of reading that directly relates to the storyline.  Tapping on items in the picture can move the story forward or provide background details that flesh the story out somewhat.  For example, the opening scene shows only a beeping alarm clock on a dark screen. Users must tap the clock to “turn on the lights” and wake up the main character.  The breakfast scene in the kitchen portrays the main character conversing with her mother. The main conversation is about being late for school, but tapping the refrigerator shows the main character is thinking about leftover chocolate cake.

The story describes the main character’s life in first person, including her struggles with inordinate tiredness, excessive urination, and thirst.  It also shows how she makes unwise dietary choices and finally faints during a sports practice.  After that incident, her doctor diagnoses her with type 2 diabetes and the story changes into her process of coming to terms with her condition and making the necessary lifestyle changes to manage the illness.  It ends on a positive note when it picks up three months after diagnosis discussing how much better the character feels and how her life has improved.  Spoiler alert: she even gets the boy in the end!  Developers did a good job of making important information accessible and easy to digest.

Entertainment

This app isn’t really intended to be entertaining, but it is intended to be engaging and developers accomplished that goal.  The interactions on each page help considerably; some provide story background, and some are just plain fun.  Also, developers included several creative “special effects” to help make the main character’s condition come to life, so to speak.  For example, she has difficulty concentrating on a conversation with her friend because she needs to use the bathroom, so her eyes constantly stray from the friend’s face to the restroom door.  She is drowsy in math class, so her eyes close gradually, blocking out the view on the screen completely.

Value

This is a free app that presents a vital message and boosts awareness of a growing health concern even for young teens-development of type 2 diabetes.  The app is engaging and interactive, and most kids will be interested enough to go through it at least once.  Great job!

Child Friendliness

This app is child-friendly and very appropriate for the target age group.

Overview

The down-eared dog called Mack is looking for his teddy bear. He looks in the sink, in the laundry, in the playroom, and all over the house. In every room, Mack becomes covered with something else. When he finally finds his teddy bear, Mack is a mess. This app combines the delightful story of the down-eared dog with focused noun acquisition activities for kids. Unfortunately, its quality and design make it difficult for it to really accomplish its mission.

Features include:

  • Read to Me option
  • Read to Myself option
  • Animated illustrations
  • Cheery background music
  • Seven learning activities

Quality

When kids first open the app, they’ll find a bright and engaging main screen. Icons invite them to choose between “play story” and “learn”. In the play story mode, kids can opt to “play with audio” or “play with text”. In the learn mode, they can choose from seven levels of basic learning activities. While the app is inviting and appears to offer a lot of value, once kids get into it, they will find it lacks a bit of quality. Inside the story, the narration is dull and is accompanied by a bit of an echo and the animated illustrations are sporadic and not good enough to really capture kids’ interest.

Education

The app has two main features designed to help kids learn – the story itself and the seven levels of language activities. The story itself is cute and kids who read it will enjoy it. However, the narration and text on the screen is a bit hard to follow. It could be improved by adding text highlighting (particularly for the target nouns the developer wishes to emphasize), breaking up the text into smaller chunks, and choosing a slightly larger font size. The learning activities do have some learning potential. Kids will learn high-frequency nouns and how to group words by functions, categories, and parts. However, a few of the activities could use some improvement. For example, the “Identifying Nouns” activity asks kids to name an object, but just assumes that what they said was correct and does not track their scores. Playing with an adult can remedy this solution, but does not make the app ideal for children who wish to play on their own.

Entertainment

While the story is cute and may capture kids’ attention, the narration and illustrations won’t help. They’re both a bit lackluster and may keep kids from reading through the entire thing. The activities, while created with good intentions, are also a bit lackluster. Kids simply listen to the instructions and tap on the correct image, which can get a bit boring after a few rounds.

Value

The app is priced comparably to other interactive eBooks. It also offers seven focused learning activities which help add to its value. However, parents should consider the quality of the app and the usefulness of the activities before downloading.

Child Friendliness

Aside from the ability to turn off the sound, kids are focused completely on the story and learning activities. The developer has not included any parent area or additional apps.

Overview

What Mice Eat is a cute interactive story that takes readers on a journey to help Bruno the mouse remember what mice like to eat. With lots of great illustrations, interactive images, and the opportunity to enjoy the story in English and Spanish, this story is one that is highly engaging and entertaining for children of all ages.

Features include:

  • English/Spanish options
  • Text highlighting
  • Interactive images

Quality

What Mice Eat is a very simple storybook app that includes interactive images, fun sound effects, and a great story that children will enjoy. The illustrations in particular are very well done and make for a high quality app that both parents and children can appreciate. The developers have done a great job of creating an app that is easy to use even for young children with arrows on each page, indicators for interactive illustrations, and text highlighting so children can enjoy the story on their own with little help from parents.

While the text highlighting function is a great addition, it seems the timing of the narration and the highlighting are a few seconds off which can make it difficult for early readers to effectively follow along. Making a few adjustments in this area will certainly enhance the overall quality of the app.

Education

Storybook apps are always great for early learners to practice their reading skills especially when they include narration options and text highlighting and What Mice Eat is no different. In addition to these educational features, this app also includes two language options (English and Spanish) which creates an opportunity for children to practice their foreign language skills in a very practical way.

Entertainment

In addition to the cute story, readers will certainly enjoy the interactive images and illustrations scattered throughout the story. The developers have also included a simple in story activity that asks children to match the foods Bruno saw in which shop. There is also an option that allows children to select the order of the story by indicating which building Bruno goes into to find food. This simple activity keeps children engaged and entertained as they read and play along.

While the story is great and there are a few additional activities, it would be nice to include an activity outside the story to give children a bit more entertainment and fun.

Value

Priced at just under four dollars this app isn’t one that will break the bank. With text highlighting, narration, two language options, and a few in story activities to enjoy, children are sure to keep coming back to this app for more. Parents will appreciate the price and value as well.

Child Friendliness

Overall the developers have done a nice job of keeping this app easy to use and safe for kids too. With text highlighting, narration options, two language options and simple arrows and indicators for young children to use throughout this app is great for children of all ages.

safaritales

Overview

It’s time to head on a jungle safari, learn about the animals within the jungle, and build early literacy skills all at the same time. Safari Tales allows kids to guide an animal around the jungle and discover facts about that animal along the way. After playing with an animal, kids are also treated to a special safari tale.

Features include:

  • Learn about jungle animals
  • Read interactive stories
  • Travel through the jungle
  • Play fun games
  • Earn stickers and awards

Quality

Safari Tales has the potential to be a great app for kids, but unfortunately it suffers in the quality department. It is a bit difficult to figure out how to enter the jungle (not all animals on the list allow access). Once inside the jungle, kids move the animals using a circular controller that is difficult to maneuver and can cause kids to feel a bit discombobulated. The meerkat guide does offer a bit of help, but it’s often after kids have reached the point of frustration or when they’re doing fine and don’t need help at all. There are bits of quality in the app, however. For example, from the moment kids open the app, they know they’re in the jungle because of the awesome background music. The animated animals are also created with a high quality.

Education

This app is designed to help kids learn about jungle animals and build literacy skills. After playing with an animal, kids unlock a special safari tale that tells the story of their animal in the jungle. The story is not narrated, but kids can tap on select words (highlighted in orange) to view synonyms. While exploring the jungle, kids can also tap on the meerkat and use the question wheel to form questions and gain information about animals.

Entertainment

There are a lot of fun activities hidden within the app. Some of them, such as the ability to paint the animal and teach it to do tricks, are easy to find. Others require following a path using the testy controller. If kids can figure out how to navigate through the jungle, they can unlock new animals, find the animal jam band, and earn stickers and other rewards.

Value

This app has a lot to offer for the price. Unfortunately, the quality issues lower its price. If kids can learn how to navigate the app without becoming frustrated, it may be worth a download, particularly because it introduces them to concepts such as synonyms and facts about jungle animals.

Child Friendliness

On the main screen of the app, kids will see icons for a parent corner and more apps from the developer. These sections are protected by a parental lock.

Overview

Sleepy Fred wants to go to bed, but before he does, he has a lot of tasks to complete. With a “scurry-hurry, scurry-hurry, quack quack quack,” will he get them all done before he falls asleep? This rhyming book takes kids through Sleepy Fred’s traditional bedtime routine and helps build their early reading skills at the same time. The cute story line and colorful illustrations along with the vocabulary and comprehension activities will help engage kids and make building their reading skills fun.

Features include:

  • Read with Text
  • Read with Audio
  • Animated illustrations
  • Vocabulary and comprehension activities

Quality

The story of Sleepy Fred is a cute one with well-placed rhymes to get kids’ attention and help them read along. The story itself does contain a few errors in capitalization and punctuation. While these will largely go unnoticed by the book’s young audience, developers still should’ve taken the time to get it right. The story also lacks voice audio prompts on the main screen which may make it difficult for kids to get to the audio version of the text or a particular comprehension activity. Within the text itself, kids will find cute pictures of Sleepy Fred and his mom. These pictures contain a small amount of animation, such as a clock ticking and a bee flying, but the level of animation could be increased or made interactive for a more engaging experience.

Education

The app bills itself as an app for early language development, however it lacks many features that support language development. For example, there is no text highlighting in the audio version of the story and the comprehension activities lack text to help kids truly build their beginning vocabulary skills. For example, the first activity, labeled “Matching Nouns,” shows kids a picture and instructs them to “Find one like this” in the picture from the story. While all of the items in the pictures are recognizable (plants, cups, bananas, etc.), it would vastly improve the app to say the name of the object at some point during the activity. This isn’t to say that the activities are bad, just that they could be improved. Some of them, such as identifying functions, identifying categories, and identifying parts of an object or animal are good activities to help kids learn to look at objects in new ways.

Entertainment

The story itself is what will engage the kids the most. It is a cute story with a fun repeating rhyme on every other page that will hook kids’ attention. The activities, while simple, are also the type of activities that beginning learners seem to enjoy.

Value

This app is priced slightly higher than other ebooks, many of which are more interactive and of a higher quality than this one. While the story is engaging and kids will like the vocabulary activities, the app doesn’t have an extended value. Once kids have read through it all, they’re not very likely to pick it up again.

Child Friendliness

Aside from the lack of audio narration on the main screen, the app earns points for child friendliness. It does not contain any ads, social media, or even a settings screen that will pull kids’ attention away from the story and activities.

Nighty Night Construction Trucks is a cute storybook app that is perfect for bedtime. With a rhyming storyline, text highlighting, and fun interactive illustrations, little readers are going to love this fun story about putting the construction trucks to bed as they too put themselves to bed.

Features include:

  • Narration options Read to me/Read to myself
  • Text highlighting
  • Matching game

Quality

The developers have done a nice job overall with the simple illustrations, sound effects, and easy to use interface which all make Nighty Night Construction Trucks easy to use for children of all ages. With narration options, arrows at the bottom of each page, and indicators that notify readers when there is a interactive image to explore, this app is very intuitive. Children are going to especially love the real life sound effects of rocks falling and trucks tooting along as they finish their work for the night.

Education

It’s always nice when developers include text highlighting and narration options in storybook apps so children of all ages can enjoy the story. This app includes both read to me and read to myself options that allow children to follow along and learn new words while they work on their reading skills. There are also additional words that are highlighted so children can tap them and hear the narrator read them aloud. This function also helps children add new words to their vocabulary which is great.

Entertainment

Not only is Nighty Night Construction Trucks a cute story, but it also includes a brief in app activity and a memory match game at the end of the story. It’s always great for children to have additional activities aside from just the story to help keep them engaged and interested in using the app over and over again. Overall the developers have done a nice job of creating an app that is quite entertaining and highly engaging.

Value

Priced at just under three dollars, Nighty Night Construction Trucks is priced pretty well compared to other similar storybook apps. With a cute story, an easy to use interface, and additional activities for children to enjoy, parents will find good value in this app overall.

Child Friendliness

With narration options, text highlighting and an easy to use interface, the developers have done an excellent job of making this app easy to use for children of all ages. These simple activities help enhance kids’ experience while they read and make the whole thing more entertaining.

Features include:

  • Highlighted narration
  • 31 learning activities
  • 2 reading options
  • Fun sound effects and images

Quality

Oceanhouse Media is known for creating high-quality ebooks and this new read & learn version of The Cat in the Hat is no exception. The book features an easy-to-navigate format and the option to skip ahead to a selected page. A settings section allows kids to choose from two different reading options. They can also turn off the music, sound, picture words, and learning activities. As kids read through the story, they’ll hear clear narration and fun sound effects, along with slightly animated pictures.

Education

As kids read through the book, they’ll find many of the same educational features found in other Oceanhouse Media books. The text features highlighted narration with the “Read to Me” option and also provides a “Read it Myself” option for more confident readers. Parents can track minutes and pages read in the parent info section. Kids can also tap on individual words to hear them read aloud.

In addition to the standard ebook features, this version of the story includes 31 learning activities. These activities come in the form of basic multiple-choice questions with a few drag-and-drop activities thrown in. They cover a wide range of skills, from phonics to reading comprehension. Kids can find the activities by tapping on different images to reveal hidden stars.

Entertainment

The story of The Cat in the Hat alone provides a wealth of entertainment for kids. Adding in the narration, animation, and hidden learning activities only increases the entertainment factor. Kids will also be entertained by fun sound effects throughout the story and positive phrase when they correctly answer the questions throughout the app.

Value

This ramped-up version of The Cat in the Hat comes with 31 learning activities hidden among the pages. This extra focus on learning increases the value of the app. However, the simple nature of the activities and the advertisements for additional developer apps may make parents wish the app was priced lower than it is.

Child Friendliness

The app has been designed to make it easy for children to navigate and enjoy. All of the parental areas are protected. This includes a link to the Dr. Seuss bookshelf and a basic parental area. Overview

Duh Color Stuff is an adventure-filled mystery with lots of plot twists and added activities for children to enjoy. Follow along as the Neighborhood Watch Kids save the neighborhood by following intricate clues and working together to solve the very strange mystery. With options to choose the direction of the story and lots of interactive activities throughout, this app is far more than just another storybook app. It is an exciting and mysterious journey for children to enjoy.

Features include:

  • Interactive puzzles and games
  • Narration options (Read to me, Read to myself)
  • Multiple story options

Quality

There is no doubt that Duh Color Stuff is a high quality app, not just because of the great illustrations and interactive bits throughout, but because the story is very intricate and entertaining for children. Add that to the easy to use interface with arrows and narration options throughout, this app is one that children of all ages can enjoy. The developers have done a really great job making this app fun, easy to use, and highly engaging.

Education

What’s great about this app is that it not only encourages children to follow along with the narrator and work on their reading skills, but it also encourages them to use their logic and problem solving skills as they decide which direction the story should go. With a variety of choice points in the story that children get to select, they can use their problem solving skills to determine which is the best way to go in order to solve the mystery. There are also puzzles and clues to be found throughout the story that help children engage their problem solving skills too.

One thing that would add to the educational value is if the developers included text highlighting to the story. This would allow early readers to be able to more easily follow along with the narrator and enjoy the story while they learn new words and practice their reading skills.

Entertainment

Duh Color Stuff is a creative story that includes mythical characters and a team of very smart kids who are trying to save their neighborhood. By working together to find clues and piece this puzzle together, they are able to do what the adults could not and save the day. With a story like this, there is no doubt children are going to be highly entertained and engaged as they read. Not only that, but they will also really enjoy the many activities included within the story.

The developers have also included an option for children to make choices about the direction of the story to dictate various outcomes which is a lot of fun for kids. Unfortunately there are some selections that don’t allow readers to move all the way through the story and instead lead readers back to the original choice point to select a different direction. This can get frustrating for kids as they select their own direction and then are guided back to make a more ‘correct’ choice. If there is freedom in selecting the direction of the story, then it should allow kids to move all the way through instead of leading them back again. With that said, the rest of the app moves quite smoothly and is highly entertaining for kids.

Value

With so many fun options and activities for children to enjoy in addition to the story you might expect this app to be priced quite high, but the developers have kept the price very reasonable at just under two dollars. With the option to have various story profiles to save your progress and lots of activities, options, and narration throughout this is one app children are going to absolutely love.

Child Friendliness

Overall the developers have done a nice job keeping Duh Color Stuff easy to use for children of all ages. Not only have they included narration options, but also arrows to indicate when to turn the page and an auto flip option for little ones. By adding a bit of text highlighting they could increase the child friendliness quite a bit especially for early readers.

Overview

Herbie the Hedgehog is a pleasant and engaging ebook intended for young children. It includes interactive illustration, narration, and three modes of play. The story is also available in four different languages with optional text boxes on each page.

Features include:

  • English, French, Spanish and German narration available
  • Interactive images hidden on most pages
  • Optional auto-play, narration, and read to myself modes
  • Show or hide text on each page
  • Expressive narration to aid comprehension

Quality

Herbie the Hedgehog is a high quality app that is responsive and performs well.  The gesture used to turn pages is reliable and intuitive, as readers swipe from the corner of the screen with an image of a curled page corner.  The narration is clear and well-paced.  Animations hidden in the illustrations are varied and well-connected to the story.

Developers should make it easier for users to find the “Home” option included in each scene.  Presently, it appears only when the text is revealed by activating the “text” button on each screen.  There should also be an option in the settings to show the text automatically instead of requiring users to reveal the text manually on each page.  Finally, there is a glitch in the ninth scene (just before the part where Herbie finds the apple) that causes the text to be duplicated four times, which covers the illustration almost completely and could be quite confusing to young readers.

Education

Herbie the Hedgehog is a fun ebook with several educational aspects.  Most scenes contain hidden interactions that are hinted at by the narration.  Children who listen carefully and follow directions will find them more quickly and easily than kids who simply tap and swipe at random.  The app does include printed text that can be shown on each page, helping early readers cement the relationship between printed and spoken words in much the same way as reading aloud does.

Herbie the Hedgehog offers users an excellent opportunity to see and hear several other languages in the narration.  Parents should be aware, however, that the English version of the app is presented in British English, so there are some unusual usages and accents.

Most of the interactive animations are well-connected to the story, such as when the narrator describes how Herbie can curl into a prickly ball, a tap on the hedgehog causes him to do so.  The app does seem to miss several opportunities for game-like interactions, however.  There is a nice scene where users tap the hedgehogs that appear and disappear to score points that I’m sure children will love.  There is another scene, though, where Herbie hears a voice before he sees its owner, and that seems like a great chance to build in a hide-and-seek game where users could look around the forest scene by moving leaves and the like.  More game-like interactions would definitely increase the educational power of this app.

Entertainment

This app will engage and entertain young children in much the same fashion as a storybook.  If the child latches on and decides it is a “favorite” that should be read again and again, it will see a lot of use.  On the other hand, some children are likely to use it a few times and then quickly grow tired of it once the hidden animations are fully explored.  The story is not particularly gripping, which will help it appeal to kids with a strong desire for security and predictability, but the lack of a serious problem for the main character may seem boring to more adventurous readers.

Value

The first twelve scenes of this story are offered without charge from the App Store, then parents will need to purchase the remaining 8 or so scenes for $3.99 as an in-app purchase.  The first part of the story may not be exciting enough to intrigue young users into requesting purchase, and the price tag seems a bit steep considering that there are few extra features or games in the app besides the animated interactions.

Child Friendliness

Herbie the Hedgehog is very child-friendly.  The required in-app purchase to finish the story is obvious to children, but it is protected by a random multiplication fact that should be beyond the comprehension of the target audience.  The settings for language selection, speakers, and background sounds are all accessible to children from the home screen.

Overview

Moppa Ice Cream is the perfect app for kids to explore and enjoy during the summer months. With endless creative monster ice cream combinations to create and a cute back story to enjoy, this app is perfect to keep little ones engaged for hours. It’s ice cream fun, without the drippy mess!

Features include:

  • 18 Fun containers
  • In app story
  • 25 Ice cream toppings
  • Easy to use

Quality

Little ones are going to love Moppa Ice Cream not only for the brightly colored images and fun characters, but also for the never-ending ice cream creating they can do. The developers have done a very nice job incorporating fun graphics, music, and a theme all children can appreciate (ice cream) into a creative app that is easy to play. With no instructions at all, children can dive right in and satisfy the silly monster’s sweet tooth with their wacky ice cream creations.

Education

While this app isn’t specifically an educational app it does have some potential to incorporate a bit of reading and early learning skills with a few tweaks. The story that is included in the app currently does not offer any narration or text highlighting, but by adding these simple details it could certainly open the opportunity for children to practice their reading skills as they play.

As it is now, the app encourages children to get crafty and creative as they put together fun ice cream creations varying in color with lots of options for different decorations and sprinkles. While not exactly educational in nature, it does bring out the more creative side of young children.

Entertainment

There is a ton of fun to be had in this app especially for young children. To start, children can read the story that illustrates what the Moppa Ice Cream fun is all about and then the fun begins. Players are provided 18 fun containers to house their ice cream creations where they then get to select various ice cream colors and flavors. After they are satisfied with their chosen scoops, they get to decorate it to their hearts content. Every thing from works, hats, funny lips, spider sprinkles, and gumballs are included in the 25 topping options which provide lots of creative opportunities for players. Once their ice cream is complete they can then feed it to one of 6 hungry monsters.

The concept of this app is very creative and the never-ending playtime makes for a great experience for young children. This has quickly become my 5 year old’s favorite app and it will likely be your child’s favorite too.

Value

Priced at just under two dollars this app is priced well. With lots of great options and creative toppings for each creation and the story that is included, children will be getting lots of playing time out of this app which parents will certainly appreciate.

Child Friendliness

Moppa Ice Cream is not only safe for children to use, but it’s easy too. Without any instructions at all, children can jump right in and start creating their fun ice cream treats. The only thing that would make it a bit more user friendly is by incorporating a bit of narration and text highlighting for the story portion of the app. Other than that it’s great for children of all ages.

Overview

Pete & Mike is an adventure filled interactive story that children will love. With whimsical illustrations and lots of animated bits throughout, this app combines unique storytelling, problem solving and adventure to keep players engaged as they help Pete & Mike help a small town of people who are afraid of a nearby dragon. Children are going to love being the hero in this interactive fairytale app as they save the day!

Features include:

  • Interactive illustrations
  • Problem solving adventure
  • Unique user interface

Quality

Pete & Mike is unlike any other adventurous game-like app that I have seen. With a very unique user interface, children must use their problem solving skills to follow the clues to solve the mystery and help the townspeople with their problems. While the set up isn’t exactly linear and takes some getting used to, players must get creative and follow the clues provided to know where to go next. Overall the quality is very good with great illustrations and interactive bits and the developers have done a great job of creating a helpful guide with flashing indicators for players in the event they get stuck.

Education

While Pete & Mike isn’t focused so much on educational features, it does provide children with a fun way to use their problem solving skills to move through the adventure and help the townspeople. Since the set up isn’t linear and players must follow the clues, it creates a fun challenge for children and creates an opportunity to really use their logic and reasoning throughout the app. Parents will also want to know that this app is designed for children between the ages of 6-8 and the text and story does not have a narration option which makes it a bit more difficult to play for younger children. Adding a narration option would definitely enhance the app and allow younger children to not only enjoy the app, but also practice a bit of their reading skills as they play.

Entertainment

Since this app is designed to be a bit of a puzzle, children who love that sort of thing are going to really enjoy this app. As players follow the clues to solve the mystery, they are guided to help specific people in the town and they must do it in a specific order. This unique set up can be a lot of fun for puzzle lovers and children who love a good challenge. With that said, it seems that the actual play time of the app is a bit short and adding some sort of bonus round or additional activity would add a bit more entertainment value for players.

Value

Priced at just under three dollars, this app is priced well for what it includes. The illustrations are very well done and the interactive features throughout make it engaging and fun to play. Both children and parents will be happy with what this app has to offer and at a price that won’t break the bank.

Child Friendliness

While it takes some getting used to at first, the developers have done a good job of making Pete & Mike easy to use and child friendly. The help features are well done and are perfect for younger users who might be playing and get stumped. One thing that would help make this app even more child friendly especially for younger users would be to add a narration option.

Overview

Most parents need to get away every now and then, but leaving the kids for a few days can evoke a range of emotions. Back Soon – Parents Vacation uses a cute rhyming story to help kids learn about the emotions they may experience when their parents go away. Even though Anna and her little brother Dan have their grandparents to entertain them, they still miss their mom and dad. By learning from the experience of Anna and Dan, kids will be more prepared when their parents take a vacation of their own.

Features include:

  • Cute rhyming story
  • Interactive illustrations
  • Read to Me option
  • Read to Myself option

Quality

Back Soon – Parents Vacation gains points more for the lessons it teaches than the quality of the story. The story is narrated with an engaging child’s voice, features a fun rhyme and is illustrated with colorful pictures. However, at times the rhyme seems a bit forced and the illustrations, while interactive, are very simple. Still kids will enjoy read through the story which they can do easily using the arrows and the page selector to help guide them from page to page.

Education

When it comes to teaching kids about emotions, the story does a good job. It accurately captures the way many children feel when mom and dad go away. The story is also good for encouraging kids to read as it is written in a fun rhyming format. What the app lacks is text highlighting which it could use to boost its educational value, especially because some of the words are a little advanced for the lower end of its age group.

Entertainment

Anna has a fun voice that will hook kids from the beginning of the story. Kids will also enjoy meeting her little brother, their parents, and grandparents. As kids read, they’ll have the opportunity to interact with the illustrations. Most of the illustrations don’t do much, but in a few instances kids can complete tasks such as packing a suitcase or matching toys with their shadows. These activities will appeal more to the preschool and kindergarten set, while older kids will enjoy more of the story itself.

Value

While priced similarly to other interactive eBooks for kids, the app’s value comes more from the story’s lesson and less from the features it contains. If parents are planning to go on vacation, it’s worth a download, especially for the longing chart at the end of the story.

Child Friendliness

Kids will be very safe within the app. Aside from a credits screen which contains information about the people who created the app and an inactive link to the developer’s website, the sole focus of the app is on the story.

Overview

The Berenstain Bears are headed on a car trip in this illustrated ebook about the popular family of bears. Kids can go along for the ride while they listen to a narrator or read the book themselves. They’ll find highlighted text, tappable words, and classic Berenstain Bears illustrations accompanied by peppy background music and sound effects. Kids won’t find animated animations or a lot of other features designed to entertain them, but they’ll still get access to a classic story that they will enjoy.

Features include:

  • Read to Me option
  • Read to Myself option
  • Record your own narration
  • Tappable words and pictures

Quality

Oceanhouse Media ebooks are known for their quality and this book is no exception. However, it has a few surprising flaws. When kids go to turn the page, they may find that the book is not as responsive as they would like. They’ll also notice that the page selector doesn’t actually include all of the pages in the book, so while kids may think they’re actually selecting the final page of the book, they’ll actually have a few more pages to go. Aside from that, the narration is clear, although it may be a bit fast for younger readers. The background sound is engaging, but quiet enough not to distract from the text.

Education

The book features text highlighting and tappable pictures and images. Many of the tappable words in the story are designed to focus on the early elementary level. Kindergarten and first grade students may find a lot of new words, while second and third grade students will more easily read through the story and enjoy its theme.

Entertainment

The lack of animation makes the book a little less exciting for kids. Thankfully, it has the benefit of classic Berenstain Bears illustrations to capture kids’ attention. Kids can also choose from three different options for reading the book, including one option that allows them to record their own narration. Since there are multiple characters in the book, kids can experiment with funny voices to help make the story more exciting.

Value

Considering the story does not come with animated illustrations or any games for kids to enjoy, it does not offer the best value for the price. However, for parents who want to build up their child’s virtual ebook collection, it’s a solid choice to add to the shelf.

Child Friendliness

Unfortunately, most Oceanhouse Media ebooks contain a lot of features to distract kids. At the end of the story, a “rate this app” button pops up. The main screen of the book also contains an info icon, a more apps icon, and an icon leading to the OM Bookshelf. While all of these are protected areas, it’s still a bit annoying to see them featured so prominently on each book, including this Berenstain Bears title.

Overview

My Little Pony: Pinkie Pie’s Sister is a cute storybook app that My Little Pony lovers will really enjoy. In this story, children are introduced to the Pinkie Pie’s very unique, very different sister named Maud. As much as Pinkie Pie wants her friends to become best buddies with her sister, things don’t go according to plan. Overall this is a fun story that teaches readers that everyone is just a little bit different and that’s perfectly okay.

Features include:

  • Read to me/Read to myself
  • Vocabulary words
  • Lively animations
  • Text highlighting

Quality

The first thing you notice in the My Little Pony apps are the amazing colors and details in the illustrations. Each page has animated segments where the characters come to life when tapped, which definitely helps to keep children engaged. The sound effects, narration, and music that is included also helps to bring the app to life to create an overall experience that children will love. The developers have also done a fantastic job creating an intuitive user interface that makes it easy for children of all ages to enjoy.

Education

Not only does My Little Pony: Pinkie Pie’s Sister teach children a great lesson about how we are all just a little bit different, but it also offers great practice for early readers. With narration options and text highlighting, children are able to follow along with the story and practice their reading skills. There are also highlighted words throughout that when tapped are repeated which will definitely help children learn new vocabulary words. There is also a word round up located at the end of the story that takes readers through various images with corresponding words to add even more words to the reader’s vocabulary.

Entertainment

Children are going to love the fun story and lively animations that are included in this story especially if they already love My Little Pony. With so many sound effects, bright colors, and enthusiastic characters, this app is more like a cartoon at times than a storybook app. With that said there aren’t any additional games aside from the word round up at the end of the story. Adding an additional activity or game would definitely increase the entertainment value of the app a bit.

Value

Priced at just under three dollars this app is a good value. With lots of animations, sound effects, narration options, and vocabulary words included, this app is one children will love to read many times over.

Child Friendliness

The developers have done a great job creating an app that is easy to use with arrows located at the bottom of each page and highlighted characters to indicate an animation point. The narration and auto play options also make it accessible for young children who aren’t reading just yet.

Overview

Earth Day Carol takes the classic story of A Christmas Carol and turns it into a story about saving the earth. Plastic Bottle Scrooge, who hates Earth Day and isn’t concerned in the least about the environment, is visited by spirits who help him learn what happens to plastic and why it’s important to reduce, reuse, recycle. As Scrooge learns how to avoid the same fate that befell his old companion Styrofoam, kids are presented with a wealth of facts about plastic and the effect it has on the earth.

Features include:

  • Plastic facts
  • Interactive illustrations
  • Positive environmental lesson
  • Read to Me and Read to Myself options

Quality

This interactive eBook is focused less on the quality and more on the content. While it offers an engaging story and fun illustrations, it lacks some popular eBook features, such as text highlighting. Some of the illustrations are interactive, while others simply contain facts that pop up when the screen is tapped. While these facts are useful, they are contained within large text boxes that can sometimes cover the text. They also appear in a random order. The story itself, however, is cute and comes with a strong lesson and the narration in the Read to Me option is clear.

Education

After reading this story, kids will be motivated to start paying attention to how much plastic they use and will start to make sure they reduce, reuse, and recycle. The story itself does a good job of outlining how plastic is made and the effect it has on the environment. Aside from the story, the book also features many pop up facts related to plastic. These facts are presented a bit randomly so kids may not fully digest them. However, teachers and parents may want to encourage kids to go back and review the facts after reading the story. Some of them may encourage kids to conduct research or start their own recycling campaign.

Entertainment

Most kids will be familiar with the tale the story is based on which will make it easier for them to understand. It’s a fairly interesting story and kids who are concerned about the earth will particularly enjoy all of the facts inside. For those not so concerned about the earth, there are a few interactive elements spread among the pages to help keep them interested.

Value

While the app lacks text highlighting and a few of the other interactive features found in popular eBooks, it has one thing going for it that those books do not – it is free. It’s definitely worth a download, even if kids only read it once.

Child Friendliness

The app does not contain a parent section, but it does promote earthdaycarol.org on the main page. While kids cannot click on the link, they’re encouraged to go to a computer to look up the website. The website itself is fairly simple and harmless, but it does contain information for teachers and other sections not designed for kids.

Overview

Why Bath Time is a cute storybook app that helps to explain why we need to take baths and teaches children about germs in a fun way. With a simple explanation that is easy to understand, great illustrations, and narration throughout, this app is great to share with children especially if they are not a fan of bath time.

Features include:

  • Narration
  • Great illustrations
  • English & French options

Quality

Why Bath Time is a cute storybook app that is full of fun images, interactive illustrations, and sound effects that will keep children engaged as they read. The narration option allows children to tap each dialogue bubble in order to activate the narration feature which is a bit different than some of the other storybook apps on the market. The simple interactive pieces are indicated with red arrows so children know what to do to bring the image to life. Overall the quality is very good and provides fun features to keep children engaged.

Education

Some of my favorite storybook apps are those that help children better understand a specific concept and this app does just that. For children that may wonder why they need to take a bath everyday and simply don’t understand the reasoning behind it, this storybook app easily explains not only why we need to take a bath, but the various ways people and animals do just that. It also explains that even when you don’t look dirty or smell, there are germs that need to be washed off in order to keep us healthy. The explanation is easy to understand and put in a fun context which is great for young readers.

One thing that I would like to see is an option for text highlighting and a way for the narration to run smoothly without the reading having to tap each dialogue bubble in order to hear the story in narration mode. Doing so would help with the flow of the app and allow children to easily follow along and work on their reading skills.

Entertainment

While there aren’t any additional activities within the story, it does include some simple interactive pieces within each page that help bring the story to life to keep children engaged. There is also a little green frog that seems to appear quite a bit throughout the story and creating a sort of search and find with this could add a bit more entertainment value to the story and create an additional activity within the story. Adding a little quiz or game to test what children have learned might also be an option to enhance the entertainment value a bit.

Value

Priced at just under one dollar, this app is a great value. Parents will appreciate the price and the educational value that this story provides without breaking the bank. Even without the text highlighting feature and additional activities, this story is still a good value.

Child Friendliness

Because this app is a little different in how it is set up with the narration option, it can be a little challenging to use for some children. There is a indicator that pops up on the dialogue bubble that should be read next, however young children may find it challenging to tap them in the appropriate order. The developers have also included arrows through out to indicate interactive pieces of the images which is very helpful and easy to use. The arrows at the bottom of each page are a little transparent and can be hard to see to move to the next page. Adding another option of swiping to the next page might help as children tend to get used to that function with many other apps.

Overview

A Parcel of Courage is a highly interactive app that includes a fun story, fun games, and educational activities that children will enjoy. With beautiful illustrations, interactive images, lively narration, and fun activities to keep children engaged, this storybook app has a lot to offer children as they play.

Features include:

  • Counting
  • Puzzles
  • Memory activities

Quality

A Parcel of Courage is a creative app with lots of things for children to do. The professional illustrations and interactive images are well done and add a ton of value to the story not to mention the sound effects and narration that is included. While the set up of the app is quite creative and the developers have included simple prompts to help children move through the activities, it isn’t the most intuitive app that I have seen. It could also use some work on the response to user touch and creating a few additional prompts for children as they play.

Education

There are so many activities included in this app and many of them are very educational. With a variety of puzzles, memory activities, counting, and sequencing, children will have lots of opportunities to practice their logic and problem solving skills. With activities that include packing oddly shaped items into a suitcase, replicating a sequence of stamps, replicating color schemes on mandalas etc. children have plenty of educational games to enjoy.

While there are many activities within and accessible outside of the story, the instructions aren’t always clear which can be frustrating for children. The story also doesn’t include a text-highlighting option that would allow readers to follow along and practice their reading skills. Adding a few more instructional prompts and the text-highlighting would greatly increase the educational value of the app.

Entertainment

There is no doubt that this app has a ton of activities for children to enjoy in addition to the story. With in story puzzles and activities and others that can be accessed outside of the story, this app offers children many opportunities to explore, learn and play. And one thing is for sure, they won’t likely get bored using this app because there is so much to offer.

Value

Priced at just under three dollars this app is a great value. With so many activities within and outside the story not to mention the story itself, this is an app that children are going to be able to enjoy for months to come.

Child Friendliness

The developer has done a great job of creating an app that children will really enjoy with loads of activities and a cute story too. The usability however could leave some children frustrated. Adding a few more verbal cues to help players identify what needs to be done would help create more ease in using the app for younger children.

Overview

Chuggington-We are Chuggineers is a great storybook app with fun activities and videos sprinkled throughout that children will love. Players will help the Chuggineers complete various tasks to help them build a bridge to help get them to Tootington. This highly engaging adventure is one that every train lover will be able to enjoy several times over.

Features include:

  • Narration options (Read to me/Read to myself)
  • Text highlighting
  • Games
  • Videos

Quality

The developers have done a great job of creating an app that is easy to use as the user interface is highly intuitive. The illustrations and videos that are included are also very well done and are what you might expect from the television show. With fun music, narration, and sound effects this app is a high quality storybook adventure that children are really going to enjoy.

Education

With narration options and text highlighting, this app allows children the opportunity to practice their reading skills as they follow along with the story. There are also fun games and activities scattered throughout the app that challenge children to use their logic and problem solving skills as they help the Chuggineers fix railways and avoid various obstacles.

Entertainment

The developers have not only done a great job with the entertaining story, but they have also included fun videos and animations through the story to help keep readers engaged. The challenging activities and games are also sprinkled throughout so children certainly will not get bored. Another great thing about the app is how the developers have made it easy for children to access the videos and games outside of reading the full story. By tapping the “contents” tab, children can scroll through the various frames to select the game or video they would like to explore.

Value

Priced at just under five dollars, this app might be a bit more than parents are used to paying for an app like this, but when you consider the high quality images, videos, and games that are included in addition to the story, it’s a fair deal. Train lovers are definitely going to get a lot of playing time out of this app and all that it has to offer.

Child Friendliness

Chuggington-We are Chuggineers is not only a fun app, but it is also very easy to use. With the various narration options and text highlighting early readers will have no problem moving through the app on their own. The set up is also very easy to use with arrows at the bottom of each page and visual prompts to help children as they play each game.

Highlights: All About allows young children to explore child-friendly topics in typical Highlights magazine style. Each section includes stories, puzzles and activity ideas that will help children take their understanding to the next level.

Features include:

  • Different kinds of puzzles that exercise visual, reasoning and other skills
  • Professional narration on stories with highlighting
  • Stories at various levels for early readers
  • Activity suggestions that get kids up and moving
  • Recording activities

Quality

Highlights: All About is a high quality app that will provide hours of fun for young children. The navigation and controls are very child-friendly, with clear icons that will help non-readers find their favorites or choose new kinds of fun. App developers have included the ability to turn background music on and off, which is always a plus. A short Parents’ Guide will help parents and caregivers find all of the features of the software. Parents should be aware, however, that the downloadable books contain a LOT of content and will take time to load for the first time. On my slower connection, it took nearly 15 minutes to download each one. Best to do that part before you promise your little one a play time!

Education

Highlights Magazine has been providing “Fun with a Purpose” for decades now, and is well-known for its consistently high-quality product. Generations of children have enjoyed the creative stories, the hidden picture puzzles, the brain-teasers, and more, and this app lives up to the same reputation as it brings these features to life on the iPad. Each activity included in the All About sections will help children have fun as they get ready to learn new things both in this context and later in school.

The app includes one free activity “book,” All About Fall. There are ten puzzles, four stories/poems, and six activities included in this free sample, so children will have a wide array of fun with this first section. The puzzles, in typical Highlights magazine style, exercise many important skills that form foundations for learning, including visual closure, eye-hand coordination, matching, and more. Each can be played again and again, and kids are sure to pick their favorites. The reading section has an array of difficulty levels represented, including a rebus story (story with pictures of some of the main items as well as words), poetry, and longer stories. Everything is beautifully illustrated and professionally narrated. I do wish there was a way to turn off the narration for older readers looking for more of a challenge, but it’s always fun to be read to. The activities section includes three creative drawing challenges on different backgrounds, a “recording studio” that uses the iPad’s built-in camera to help the child make a video showing actions to go with a fall poem, and two videos that show other children responding to questions that should get children thinking about interesting topics.

Entertainment

The Highlights: All About app is very entertaining. The activities are fairly short, but very engaging. Nearly any child will find something fun to do, just like the magazine always includes an array of content that will capture the interest of most readers. Everything is bright and colorful, but not distractingly so. Children can find just the right amount of interactivity to suit their current mood, too, ranging from completely interactive tasks like the hidden pictures or the drawing activities to quieter listening to stories or even watching a video.

Value

The Highlights: All About app is free in the App Store and comes with one “book” about fall. There are currently five other books available and five more listed as “coming soon.” Each of the extra activity packs cost $1.99, but if a user has purchased the print version, they receive a code to download the companion volume in the app for free. Each of these packs include about twenty activities, and will give most children quite a bit of engaging fun.

Child Friendliness

This app is child-friendly. There are effective parent gates on all email, rating, and internet links, as well as purchase of other books. However, when a user presses the wrench on the home screen or touches a new book that has not been purchased, the input fields and buy buttons are visible.

Another great feature is the voice record option that can provide children with an additional opportunity to practice reading aloud.

Entertainment

While there aren’t any additional games or activities outside the story, there is an in-story game that allows children to search through the illustrations to find the spider and the mouse located on each page. Once they reach the end of the story, readers can see how many they found. Children will no doubt enjoy the story and the search and find game within, but adding an additional activity outside of the story would add to the overall entertainment value.

With gorgeous illustrations that come to life with the tap of a finger and the fun narration that is included throughout, this app is loads of fun. It also includes a nice message about friendship that is great for children of all ages.
Features include:

  • Narration options (Read to me, Read it Myself)
  • Sight word practice
  • Friendship photo
  • Great illustrations

Quality

There is no doubt the quality of the illustrations and images used in this app are superb. With bright colors and simple animations as the illustrations come to life, this app will keep children engaged as they enjoy the story. The developers have also done a nice job with creating an app that is not only visually appealing, but also has music, sound effects, and professional narration throughout. The user interface is easy to use with arrows at the bottom of each page to move forward. Overall, this app is very well done.

Education

In addition to the wonderful friendship theme of the story that teaches children a valuable lesson about making friends and being honest, this app also allows children to add to their vocabulary using sight words. Throughout the story there are more challenging words that are highlighted in the story. Readers can tap the word to hear it read aloud to help them with their reading skills. The story is also includes text highlighting for children to follow along.

One of the additional activities includes an album of images and words that also help children learn and practice their reading skills. Words like hole, picnic, potion, and punch are used to help children expand their vocabulary and reading skills.

Entertainment

My Little Pony: Hearts & Hooves Day is not only an entertaining story, but the developers have included a bit of animation throughout that adds a bit more interest to the app. While there aren’t many additional activities, the word round up and the friendship photo activities do give readers something else to do in addition to reading the story itself. Adding one more game-like activity would definitely add to the entertainment value of the app overall.

Value

Priced at just under two dollars this app is priced very well. With narration options, educational features, and great illustrations that children will love, parents will definitely appreciate the price.

Child Friendliness

The developers have done a nice job creating a storybook app that is easy to move through without a ton of instruction. With arrows at the bottom of each page, readers can easily move through the story. The animated illustrations can be a bit confusing depending on how many characters are involved. Each character is highlighted if they are meant to come to life. In some scenes it can be confusing as to which character speaks first and when to turn the page. Creating a one tap function so the page comes to life in the correct order might make things a bit easier for young children.

Biscuit’s Valentine’s Day is a great storybook app full of beautiful illustrations that children will love. With very simple interactive images, this app has just enough to keep children engaged in the story without overwhelming them as they read along. In addition to the awesome images, the developers have made sure to include several easy to use games and activities that players of all ages can easily enjoy.

Education

Like many of the storybook apps on the market, the developers have included text highlighting that can help early readers follow along as they use the ‘read to me’ option. This allows children to learn new words and expand their vocabulary in a very easy way. There are also additional activities such as the memory game and the puzzle that test player’s logic and problem solving skills as they play. While these aren’t ‘educational’ in the traditional sense of the word, it definitely provides great practice for children.

Entertainment

There is nothing I love more than a storybook app with a few extra activities that children can enjoy and this app tops the list. In addition to the story the developers have included an in story game where children can find the hiding dog biscuits within the story. There are also 4 additional activities including a coloring book, sticker book, memory game, and puzzles for little ones to enjoy. citynights

App Info

Overview

City Nights is a soothing ebook featuring vivid descriptions of the city at night in rhyming verse. Young readers will enjoy the sounds of the city slowing in the evening. Kids who live in the city will enjoy the familiarity and kids who live in the country will relish a unique experience.

Features include:

  • Unique art work
  • Vivid, poetic language
  • Read to me and read to myself modes
  • Interactive animations
  • Engaging and realistic sound effects

Quality

City Nights is a well-made app that children will enjoy. The interface is intuitive, and the narration is of high quality. The animations and sound effects on each page are simple, yet effectively represent city sights and sounds. However, there are times when the interactions didn’t seem to respond to touch like they should have, and several instances when the menu did not activate completely. It was showing, but the links were not responding. The problem seemed to be that the menu bar was incompletely extended up from the bottom of the page, and when it was pulled farther upwards, it worked well.

Education

This app provides young children with some wonderful vocabulary and sensory images. The text is filled with vivid, sensory words that evoke the sights and sounds of the city. To a child who lives there, it will seem very familiar, and to a child from another environment, it will seem exotic and interesting. It is a poem, so will afford young readers with some great opportunities to discover rhyme and rhythm. The story is short, however, and the book does not offer much variety in the way of interactions (most are drag and drop and a few are toggle switches that turn something on or off).

Entertainment

City Nights is a very soothing app, and makes a great bedtime story for young children. The artwork is done in a unique style that many will find engaging, and the animations (though simple) will be fun for the first time or two. I especially liked getting to help the raccoon tip over the trash can! But I’m not sure that children will remain engaged long with the interactions, because there’s only so many times you want to “drive” the cars down the same city street or walk the shoes off of the page.

Value

As ebooks go, this one is on the short side, with limited interactions. It’s a pleasant story, and if a child latches onto it as a bedtime favorite, it will be used many times. However, once most children have read through it a time or two, I think they will be ready to move on to more engaging activities, since there are no games or other perks to be found.

Child Friendliness

This app is very child-friendly, so parents can feel confident that there are no worries when their children play with it.

Three Little Pigs is a cute storybook app with beautiful graphics and great narration. This classic story is combined with detailed illustrations that look as though they are made of various fabrics that adds a bit of interest to the story that children will love. With fun sound effects and simple interactive bits throughout this story is great for young children.

Features include:

  • Text highlighting
  • Narrations options (Read to me, Read to myself)
  • Beautiful illustrations

Quality

There is no doubt this app is very well done and the developers have done a great job bringing this classic story to life with simple details in the illustrations and interactive bits. The illustrations have a textured quality that make for more interesting images children will love. While the interactive pieces are very simple and aren’t full-on animations, they are enough to create interest for little ones as they read through the story. The user interface is also very easy to use and simply requires a tap of the finger in the bottom right corner to turn the page.

Education

While there aren’t any specific educational activities included in this app, children do have the chance to follow along with the text highlighting as they read through the story. This function is also great for children who are practicing their reading skills or early readers who will be able to learn new vocabulary etc. Adding an additional educational activity outside of the story would definitely increase the value overall.

Entertainment

Three Little Pigs is a cute story and this app makes it even more entertaining by including fun interactive bits within the illustrations. While they aren’t complete animations, they do add a bit of interest in the story as children tap and touch the various images throughout. The narration and background music and sound effects also add to the overall entertainment value which is great. It would be beneficial to add a few extra activities to make this one that children will continue to come back to. Adding a few games or coloring pages would greatly add to the entertainment value of the app.

Value

Priced at just under two dollars, this app is priced very well. With text highlighting, narration options, and beautiful illustrations, parents are sure to be happy with the value this app provides. Adding a few extra activities would definitely increase the overall value, but at this price it definitely isn’t one to break the bank.

Child Friendliness

The developers have done a nice job of creating an app that is easy to use and fairly intuitive. Without a ton of instruction, children can easily move through the app by tapping the bottom right corner to turn the page. The menu options to change the narration and languages etc. are a bit hidden from the main page. roobarb

Overview

Roobarb the green dog organizes a model airplane race in this animated ebook, but his feline neighbor, Custard, nearly steals the show (and the grand prize). The ebook is based on the popular British children’s TV show.

Features include:

  • Read to me/read to myself options
  • Professional narration by British actor Tamsin Greig
  • Interactive animations on each page
  • Record your own sound effects
  • Words highlighted as they are narrated

Quality

This ebook app works well and is easy to use. There is an instruction page to clarify the mechanics, if needed, though. There are a few minor drawbacks that parents should be aware of. The text does contain a few grammatical errors scattered throughout the book. There is no way to turn off the background music or adjust its level, which might make it difficult for young readers with attention problems. Pages turn with a right to left swipe in the middle of the screen instead of the more typical swipe from the corner. One character does call another “stinker” at one point in the story, which may concern some parents. All in all, however, the ebook is cute and it’s fun to learn about new characters.

Education

This ebook offers an engaging story that young children will enjoy. The interactions on each page trigger animations, dialog and sound effects that enhance the story, which is wonderful to see. The text of the story itself uses a rich vocabulary, full of words like “magnificent” and “scuttled.” The Read-to-Me option highlights the words as they are narrated, which is great for younger of less-confident readers. There is also a Read-to-Myself option, but no way for intermediate readers to get clues about the challenging words, such as a touch-activated thesaurus or dictionary similar to other ebooks for this age group. Many pages offer a Record-Your-Own Sound Effects feature, which children will love. I do wish there were a few related activities offered during or after the story, though, to extend its educational value. Parents should also be aware that the app is voiced by people with British accents and also that many words, such as “aeroplane” and “flavoured” are spelled in the British manner, which may throw some children off balance.

Entertainment

Roobarb & Custard: When Custard Was Grounded is a fun ebook with an engaging story. The Record-Your-Own sound effects feature will entrance them, and the interactive animations really make the story come to life. American children may not be familiar with Roobarb and his friends, since they are from British television, but if they enjoy the franchise, there are other Roobarb paper books and toys available, as well as the Boj series of ebook apps from the same developer.

Value

At $3.99, this children’s ebook seems a bit pricy since it does not include any supplemental educational activities. If your child is already a fan of the characters, or if the story becomes a favorite, it will be a worthwhile investment. It’s even a good deal if you have several children who will enjoy the story. However, if your young reader does not fall in love with Roobarb and his friends, the app may gather dust after the first reading or two.

Child Friendliness

Roobarb & Custard: When Custard Was Grounded is a very child-friendly app. Parents won’t have a thing to worry about as their children play with it, because developers covered all of the safety bases in this one!

billy possum

App Info

Price: $9.99
AppStore User Rating:

Download on the App Store

Overview

Billy Possum’s Interactive Comprehension is a children’s ebook in 25 chapters with dozens of well-thought-out comprehension exercises scattered through the story.

Features include:

  • 25 chapters
  • Beautiful illustrations
  • Stress on high-level comprehension skills
  • Hint system
  • Diagnostic records of student responses

Quality

Billy Possum’s Interactive Comprehension is a beautifully-created app that will give children hours of beneficial comprehension practice. All features work well and most are very intuitive to use. The questions appear after sections of relevant text, and students cannot bypass the activities to continue reading without interacting with the exercises. The directions to access the hints could be a little clearer, though. The adult documentation indicates that clues and hints are available by clicking on the character, but should also tell users that the hints appear in the text above the question screen and users must scroll back through the story to find the bold-faced text hints. The App Store description also indicates that results can be exported for evaluation and diagnostic purposes, but instructions to access this feature should be in the documentation in the parent’s section of the app itself.

One other concern is that the text of the story and questions have a noticeable number of typographical errors, which could be distracting or set a poor example for students. For instance, one question in the chapter 8 exercises has “elaves” within an option. In chapter 10, there is a place in the text where the word “of” has been substituted for the word “off.” Also, there is a discrepancy between the audio levels of the narrator reading the main story and the narration of instruction or correction on the questions. The story is at a pleasing volume, but the instructions are relatively soft and difficult to hear without adjusting the device’s volume.

Education

This app truly lives up to its name in terms of the comprehension exercises provided. It is outstanding! In addition to the lower-level, detail and simple inference questions that are usually used for these types of apps, the author has included a large selection of higher-order comprehension skills designed to access processes such as sequencing, prediction and evaluation. This is a refreshing change of pace and very much needed by students.

The app presents short segments of the story within each chapter, then has students stop and respond to a comprehension exercise. The segments are long enough to move the story forward yet short enough to help young readers keep track of the action.

In addition to multiple choice and sequencing questions, the app also has some visual exercises! Users are offered the opportunity to use a preselected background scene and an array of characters and other items to create a visualization of what has just happened in the story. Visualization is frequently overlooked as a comprehension strategy, so it is really great to see it being utilized so well throughout this ebook.

The app has a read-to-me and a read-to-myself mode, and also offers vocabulary assistance in the form of accessible definitions for highlighted challenging words. Teachers will also be very pleased with the hint system for the questions, as it helps children refer back to the story for textual evidence to support answers. And it’s always great to have an app that will record students’ performance, making it much easier to see how they are progressing and to provide evidence-based justification for any remedial lessons needed.

Entertainment

Billy Possum’s Interactive Comprehension is a great story that will undoubtedly engage the audience. The characters are fun and interesting, and the story moves seamlessly through numerous plots and subplots. Children will definitely keep coming back to find out what happens next to Billy Possum and all of the other forest creatures. Since it is set in Australia, the animals are not those that American children are likely to see as commonplace, as they include creatures such as echidnas and koalas. The narration used in the read-to-me version is well-voiced and full of expression, too, which will help younger children stay engaged.

Value

This app may seem expensive at first at $9.99, but when you realize that there are literally hours of learning time available for each of several children, it becomes a good investment. I timed myself (as an adult) on the first five chapters, and took over half an hour to get through the content in the first five chapters listening to the read-aloud version. There are 25 chapters, so you do the math! It would be even better if there were a way to manually clear the students’ answers if desired. As is, the questions stay answered, and the only way to allow the same child a chance to replay the story is to open a new account under a different name or to delete the app and start again. Developers may also want to consider making the first few chapters into a free sample so parents and teachers can try the system out and see if their students will engage well with the app. $9.99 is a large investment to make on a hunch that your child will like it.

Child Friendliness

This app is very child friendly. Parents and teachers can rest assured that children will play safely.
