Overview

Alligator in the Elevator is a version of the classic game of Memory using a six by four tile board. It also offers a catchy and engaging animated music video of the classic children’s song of the same name. The app is designed for toddlers and preschoolers, and focuses on recognition of numerals 1-10.

Features include:

  • Builds memory and other foundational academic skills
  • Features intuitive game play
  • Uses silly pictures and animations to grab and keep attention
  • Includes parents area explaining the app’s benefits
  • Includes music video

Quality

Alligator in the Elevator Matching Game is a high quality app that is well-designed for toddlers and preschoolers. The app features an intuitive interface based primarily on pictures, so youngsters do not have to read to enjoy the fun. It is simple to turn background music on or off using a musical note icon in the header for the game.

Education

This app is one of a set of three marvelously appropriate toddler/preschooler pastimes. The other two apps in this series from developer Little Starship Productions include Alligator in the Elevator Jigsaw Puzzles, and Alligator in the Elevator 123 and are definitely worth a look if you have children in this ages group.

Alligator in the Elevator Matching Game features a music video of the signature children’s song, a rollicking and silly discussion of what might happen if one were to meet an alligator in an elevator. The music is catchy and memorable, and the title character suitably silly, not to mention the sheer fun of saying the phrase “alligator in the elevator” again and again (try it and you’ll see what I mean!).

The main feature of this app is a memory game where the player turns over tiles searching for a match. Each tile has the title character in a different position with some animations. In addition, the numbers 1-10 are shown on 20 of the 24, encouraging children to match them. The board is six tiles by four tiles, so not too complex for beginners. Correctly matched tiles disappear, making the game progressively easier as more are matched.

Memory games of all sorts are foundational to later academic success, and this one not only exercises and builds memory skills, but it’s also quite fun.

Entertainment

Alligator in the Elevator Matching Game is wonderfully entertaining for young children. Few youngsters in this age group can resist silliness and nonsense, and the very idea of this alligator showing up in an elevator definitely qualifies. The music video is loads of fun, and will be played again and again. The memory game poses just the right amount of challenge for most kids in this age group, and since it’s different each time it’s played, has a lot of replay value.

Value

This app (and its sister apps “Alligator in the Elevator Jigsaw Puzzles” and “Alligator in the Elevator 123”) are free in the App Store, making the trio an excellent value. If you have young children at home or in your classroom, they are well worth the downloads.
