Quality
What Mice Eat is a very simple storybook app that includes interactive images, fun sound effects, and a great story that children will enjoy. The illustrations in particular are very well done and make for a high quality app that both parents and children can appreciate. The developers have done a great job of creating an app that is easy to use even for young children with arrows on each page, indicators for interactive illustrations, and text highlighting so children can enjoy the story on their own with little help from parents.
While the text highlighting function is a great addition, it seems the timing of the narration and the highlighting are a few seconds off which can make it difficult for early readers to effectively follow along. Making a few adjustments in this area will certainly enhance the overall quality of the app.
Education
Storybook apps are always great for early learners to practice their reading skills especially when they include narration options and text highlighting and What Mice Eat is no different. In addition to these educational features, this app also includes two language options (English and Spanish) which creates an opportunity for children to practice their foreign language skills in a very practical way.
Entertainment
In addition to the cute story, readers will certainly enjoy the interactive images and illustrations scattered throughout the story. The developers have also included a simple in story activity that asks children to match the foods Bruno saw in which shop. There is also an option that allows children to select the order of the story by indicating which building Bruno goes into to find food. This simple activity keeps children engaged and entertained as they read and play along.
While the story is great and there are a few additional activities, it would be nice to include an activity outside the story to give children a bit more entertainment and fun.
Value
Priced at just under four dollars this app isn’t one that will break the bank. With text highlighting, narration, two language options, and a few in story activities to enjoy, children are sure to keep coming back to this app for more. Parents will appreciate the price and value as well.
Child Friendliness
Overall the developers have done a nice job of keeping this app easy to use and safe for kids too. With text highlighting, narration options, two language options and simple arrows and indicators for young children to use throughout this app is great for children of all ages.
