Quality

Developers have created a high quality app for early math learners. This is evident from the time kids first open the app to reveal the flaming tiki torches and the organized main screen. The quality is further revealed through the settings section, which allows parents and teachers to customize the content kids see, and through the Adventurer Training mode, which shows kids how to use the TouchPoints feature. The math problems kids must solve are also presented clearly and kids can move smoothly from one chapter to another.

Education

Jungle Addition covers basic counting, number sequencing, addition, and number comparison skills. The app is divided into seven different chapters. Parents and teachers have the option to customize each chapter by selecting the number of problems (3-10), the order (random or sequential), and the skill or span of numbers. Kids have the option of playing at three different levels: Adventurer Training, Skill Practice, and Adventure Mode. An instructions section explains the TouchMath touch points and multi-sensory approach used in each of the three levels. The Adventurer Training mode simply introduces kids to the TouchPoints on each number, while the Skill Practice mode takes kids through seven chapters of skills. In Adventure Mode, kids solve a jungle mystery while completing math problems. A monkey tour guide, Newton, leads them through the levels and they must score 70% or higher on each level to advance.

Entertainment

Both Skill Practice mode and Adventure Mode provide plenty of entertainment for kids. While the app does not have background music or sound effects, aside from on the main screen, it does hook kids on the jungle theme through the objects (piranhas, bananas, and other jungle-related items) in the math problems, and through the tiger avatars and monkey guide in Adventure Mode. Limiting each skill to 10 questions also helps improve the entertainment factor of the app and help ensures that kids get enough practice to help them master a skill without becoming bored with the questions.

Value

The app offers a unique approach to learning numbers and seven chapters of basic addition skills. It also presents its content in a high-quality forms. While there is a lot of value in that content, the app is priced significantly higher than math apps of similar content and quality. Parents looking for a multi-sensory approach to addition or teachers looking for the ability to manage a classroom full of students may find that the app is worth it.

Child Friendliness

The app contains a protected parent area which includes information on how the app was developed, links to social media, and the developer’s privacy policy. Teachers who work with the app’s dashboard option (available with a subscription) can also assign student passwords and login information to help customize the app.
