Kate and Harry are back in another exciting children’s app but this time with a twist. Kate and Harry in Africa is an app that takes players on a journey through the African Safari with a fun board game-like app. This app allows children to play on their own or with a partner to move through the game taking photos of various animals they find along their journey. Great for learning the names of animals and counting, this app is a ton of fun and quite different from the other Kate and Harry apps we have reviewed (Ride a Pony with Kate and Harry and Build a Ship with Kate and Harry).

Features include:

  • Board game concept
  • Single and Multi-player
  • African animals
  • Intuitive interface

If you have played with any of the other Kate and Harry apps, you know that the illustrations and images are brightly colored and very well done. The simple animations are great for young children and the audio and sound effects add interest to the already engaging material. Kate and Harry in Africa incorporates various African animals, counting, and a board game into an easy to use interface that even young children will be able to play. If you liked the other Kate and Harry apps, you are going to love this one!

Many of the Kate and Harry apps focus more on entertainment, but this app helps children learn to count and learn a variety of African animals as they move through the game. Not only are they learning how to play a more traditional board game by rolling the die and counting the spaces, but they are also learning to recognize animals like the cheetah, gorilla, and gazelle. The narration included in the app also helps children who are more auditory learners to count and learn the animals as they watch Kate and Harry move along the board.

The board game set up is a great way to incorporate a lot of fun and with the option of playing on your own or with another player it is a great app to keep children entertained while they learn. The board game is set up with a die for children to roll and move that number of spaces. The narrator counts out the spaces and depending on where they land players may end up in the jungle taking a picture of a particular animal, moving ahead, or moving backwards. There are also points in the game where they have the option of selecting which path to take which makes this versatile app even more fun.

Kate and Harry in Africa is priced very well at just under two dollars and when you can have two children playing the app at the same time, it is well worth the money. Don’t miss this app especially if you have checked out the other Kate and Harry apps!

Developers have done a magnificent job keeping this app not only easy to use, but also safe for children as well. The intuitive set up gently prompts children to the very next step in the game so they don’t get stuck in any one area.

There is a parents area that includes links to the other Kate and Harry apps like Kate and Harry Ride a Pony and Kate and Harry Build a Ship which we have reviewed as well as an in app purchase for additional African animals. This area is protected so children will have to touch and hold the button for a specific amount of time. What’s great about this section is that the icons are small and gray so children aren’t likely to end up in that area, but if they do it is protected.
