Snowpo: The Trip for Fish and Chips is a cute digital story about a polar bear that gets himself into a little bit of trouble as he ventures to England to find his favorite meal of fish and chips. With wonderful images and interactive illustrations, this app will delight little ones as they follow the charming and ever so cute Snowpo on his adventure.

With illustrations that have a wonderful cartoon quality to them and the interactive component that allows children to move the images around, this app is done very well. As children follow along with the narrator or read to themselves, they can tap and toss some of the images to move them around the screen. Also included is an in-app activity that asks children various questions to answer using the illustrations. This activity is a nice addition to the digital story and is a great way for parents to interact with children as they read through the book.
With text highlighting and narration options, this app allows young readers to practice their reading skills by either to themselves or by following along with the narrator. The interactive game included also offers practice with spelling, food/object recognition, memory and rhyming words. The key to these activities is finding the objects within the illustrations that help answer each question and moving them around the screen.
The only downfall to the in-app activity is when the child is using the app alone. Some of the activities may require the assistance of another person since the app itself doesn’t indicate whether the answer is correct or not. So parents may want to assist with answering the questions as their child moves through each question. Incorporating a feature that allows children to know if they have answered the question correctly may help in this regard.
The story itself is a very entertaining tale with a charming main character. The interactive function of the illustrations and in-app activity also help to keep little ones engaged.
With that said it may be helpful to add an additional activity that is outside of the story itself to provide more focus to the activity instead of having it within the story as it may be distracting for younger children.
My favorite digital books for kids are those that include other activities besides just the story and Snowpo: The Trip for Fish and Chips certainly delivers in that regard. It is also priced competitively compared to some of the other digital book apps that are available. For just under two dollars, children will not only enjoy a cute story, but they will also get practice with reading, spelling, and have fun, which are all components to a wonderful app.
Overall, this app is very easy to use and children will not have a problem moving through the app on their own. The developers have included a short paragraph on the main page that explains how the illustrations can move around the screen. They also explain what the “!” button means on each page. While that is helpful to know, the “!” button on each page of the app is very small and it can easily be missed by young children.
Parents will not have to worry about any social media links, in-app advertisements, or in-app purchase links since none of these components are included. Children can simply enjoy a wonderful story without the unnecessary clutter.
