The main focus of Simplex Spelling Phonics 2 Syllables is on syllables and how they affect the way we read, speak and spell. Recommended for children ages 6 and older, this universal app offers a relaxing way for children to learn over 650 high frequency words.

The 650 plus words are broken down into 54 lists, categorized by spelling patterns and difficulty levels; such as words that begin with wh, wr or compound words to name a few. Each lesson builds on the skills learned in previous lessons; skills such as syllables, sounds, spelling rules and more. During the lesson each word is spoken, used in a sentence and then spoken again. The user can repeat the narration as many times as needed, repeat just the word or use the hint button for extra help.

Simplex Spelling Phonics 2 is like having your own personal tutoring sessions. Don’t panic kids it doesn’t mean boring! The app requires constant user interaction. Kids are able to drag letters, touch buttons, and will receive positive feedback.

Parents and teachers are able to customize items such as the number of times the word must be spelled correctly before it is considered mastered, use lower or upper case, QWERTY or alphabetic keyboard, use US, UK or Canadian English spelling of words for each of the user accounts. The app allows for up to 40 individual user accounts. Parents or teachers can also check the progress of each of those accounts individually. Accessing word lists can be done easily and in a number of ways. Be aware that children do have access to the Settings, tracking features and other user accounts.

Simplex Spelling Phonics 2 has a design that makes it appealing to all ages. It is easy to navigate and includes plenty of in-app assistance for parents or teachers customizing the app or children using it to improve their spelling. Color choices used in the design of the app are very pleasing, as are the sound effects and narration.

The app does contain a small number of external links which are nicely tucked away on the mail button. The mail button contains a menu of options, including one to hide the button. No in-app purchases, ads or social media are included in the app. We love kid-safe apps!

Bottom line

Simplex Spelling Phonics 2 is an inviting environment for improving spelling, phonics and reading.
Simplex Spelling is one of the best ways to improve English spelling and reading skills. Using a powerful combination of phonics lessons, spelling/word patterns, syllabication, our unique “reverse phonics” (phonics encoding) approach and contextually relevant spelling rules.

Teaching over a year of spelling curriculum with more than 650 high frequency words divided into 54 lists that are organized by spelling patterns and difficulty levels. Each of the 54 lists comes with a lesson that teaches one of the basic building blocks of spelling in the English language. These basic building blocks include syllables, sounds, spelling rules and some of the more advanced English phonograms.

Our spelling lists focus on some of the highest frequency words in the English language to help students establish a base foundation of literacy and confidence with spelling and reading.

Students learn a new concept for each lesson building on the skills learned from previous lessons and those covered in Simplex Spelling Phonics 1. Simplex Spelling Phonics 2 guides the student and acts as a personal spelling coach with every word, while teaching students “how to spell” English words. Our “reverse phonics” hint feature breaks each word down into individual phonemes to improve phonemic awareness, a critical skill in achieving literacy.

One of the main areas of focus in Simplex Spelling Phonics 2 is on syllables and how they affect the way we speak, read and spell. Every word is broken down into its syllables both visually and auditorily to help students build phonological awareness skills. Many lessons teach the concepts of open and closed syllables, compound words, the rules governing vowels in syllables and syllable stresses. The stress on each syllable is subtly conveyed with every word to help students understand how the stress on a syllable affects the way words are pronounced and spelled. The schwa sound /ə/ and its occurrence in English words is also taught.

Recommended age 6+
