Fido’s Treehouse Scavenger Hunt is a silly, but super fun treasure hunt game that’s ideal for kids in the 3 – 7 age range. The game has 2 play modes: Free Play for children aged 1 – 5, and Challenge Mode for kids aged 5 – 8. In both modes, there are plenty of things to see and do in Fido’s Treehouse Scavenger Hunt.

In the Free Play mode you get to explore 3 different locations; the yard, treehouse and park. There are many interactive spots on the pages including a dog you can play with, birds you can feed, flowers you can grow, and music to make.  In this mode there isn’t a goal – you just get to explore freely and see what happens.

In the Challenge Mode you have 15 clues to solve to get the treasure. The clues aren’t always easy and even the hints can be a bit cryptic, but that is part of the fun. Just don’t forget to explore ALL the different areas to solve the clues. Once you solve all the 15 clues, you can explore or start a treasure hunt again. Each treasure is different, although you will notice some clues get repeated. It’s important to note that if you use the in-app home button during game play, you will lose your place in the treasure hunt. Not bad if you’re just starting, but if you’re on clue 14….well, that can be frustrating.

Overall, the design is pretty good, but the quality of the graphics is poor in places. I would expect an app developed specifically for the iPad to have a better, HD quality. Also, the audio quality is horrible, echo-y, and sometimes it is difficult to hear what is being said. In addition, the clues are read only. It would be much better to have an option to hear the clues, especially for pre-readers.

There was one error I came across during game play which was that I had just grown a blue flower. When it came to the clue “Grow the blue flower”, I had already done it, but it wasn’t acknowledged. To resolve this, I had to visit another part of the game and when I came back the blue flower was reset, so that I could grow it again. I didn’t come across this problem again, but it was an annoying glitch.

If this was a beautifully polished app, I wouldn’t have a problem with the $2.99 price tag. It’s not quite there yet, but it’s close and there is lots of fun things to do.

Bottom line

Fido’s Treehouse Scavenger Hunt is creative and fun for kids 3 – 7 years, but I would like to see a little more polish to the game in regards to the quality of graphics and sound.
